RIE Memories .... so dear to everyone’s heart. We, the Senior Class of nineteen hundred and fifty-two, will always remember our “growing up” years with their successes and, I’m afraid, their failures. Most of us started school together, and we learned to know each other well. Now, as we graduate, we will be saying “so long” to our associates and friends, as each of us goes his way. Not really away, perhaps, hut into a new, different adult life filled with people whom we will meet and associate with in a different manner. This should not seem strange to us, because this is what we have been preparing for; through the years our teachers have taught us how to cope with new situations. Most of us were born during the times which we hear our parents call “the depression”. But each of us since that time has developed a strong faith and a lasting hope for an ultimate peace throughout the world. With our extensive training, we know we can help work toward God’s goal of brotherhood among all people. This is why we will always hold our school years among our most precious memories. Here we have learned to understand our fellow-man, to give more than take, and to use our freedoms in the right ways. We will continue to learn more of course, but the basis of this knowledge and our desire to increase it started in school. We wish to thank the Faculty and all others for making this wonderful free education possible and hope we will maks you proud of us. We also wish to pass this word on to our successors: “What You Are To Be, You Are Now Becoming”. S. Keairns 6 Mr. Daugherty is very successfully completing his seventh year as Superintendent of the Jackson City Schools. We are very fortunate to have him. He has put forth his greatest effort to help us in every possible way. He attended Ohio University for two years; then he received his A.B. degree from Rio Grande College where he was very active in dramatics. Later, he entered Ohio State University, obtaining his A.M. degree; then he attended Kent State University. Mr. Daugherty has had much experience in teaching as well as supervising students. He first taught at Monroe school in Jackson County, then at the elementary school in Washington Township, then elementary school in Roads; he was the local Superintendent at Mount Pleasant in Jefferson County, and also at Wintersville, Ohio. He was Superintendent of Schools of Jefferson County. Naturally, Mr. Daugherty belongs to manv professional organizations: the N.E.A., P.T.A., American Association of School Administrators, Ohio and Jack-son City Education Associations. He is a past president of the Eastern Ohio Teachers’ Association, and last year was elected president of the Southeastern Ohio Education Association. We feel that our Mr. Daugherty is a very capable fellow whom everyone likes and respects. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, and he teaches the adult Bible Class at the Christian Church. Mr. Daugherty enjoys many hobbies. His favorite spot is the outdoors where he spends much time hunting and fishing. He has an avid interest in guns, and owns many himself. Being an ardent outdoorsman, he also is very interested in conservation, and he is a member of the Farmer-Sportsman Club. Jackson is very proud to have Mr. Kermit Daugherty as City School Superintendent. He is an advisor and friend to all, and he has rightfully earned his title. 6 Oun The student body of J.H.S. may well feel fortunate in having as our principal, Melbra Thornton. He is truly a leader for all of us who surely need to be led. After having graduated from Cadmus High school in Gallia County, he further prepared himself for his life's profession by attending Rio Grande College from which he received his A.B. degree in. 1927. Later he attended Ohio State University where in 1933 he received his M.A. degree. At the end of this school term, he will have completed 18 years at Jackson High School, during which time he has endeared himself to his countless students as well as to the parents with whom he has come in contact. He is an active member of our community, always upholding all of its worthy projects and is at present the President of the Jackson County Tuberculosis Association. Being very appreciative of nature and outdoor life, he enjoys gardening as his chief hobby. Naturally, this fine man is a spiritual man, and we find him a loyal member of the Methodist Church. His understanding personality and his interest in the student as an individual have been of great value in shaping the lives of many. E SANFORD KEAIRNS The position of assistant J.H.S. Alumni, E. S. He is also interested in educational organisations, being a member of the N.E.A., O.E.A., and S.E.O.A. As a hobby, he gets much pleasure from fishing. He also has an interesting stamp collection, and has become quite a successful photographer. His untiring efforts, his constant willingness to give good advice and his good judgment and interest in the students' welfare, mentally, morally and spiritually, have done much to encourage boys and girls and to help them out in the tomorrows of life. Another busy person in our office is Anna Nail, secretary to Mr. Daugherty. Anna makes out reports and records for the ether schools in the city, takes care of the money of all the school organi-zations, makes out the faculty payroll, and acts as right hand to the Board of Education. Our thanks go to these two girls who play such an important role in keeping the wheels of our school running smoothly. Anna Nail Carol Jean Johnson Office Assistants To assist them in any way possible, Carol Jean and Anna have girls in the school who take messages to students, take the absent slips to each room, help write excuses, and do numerous other jobs which must be done. These girls, while giving their assistance, gain much office experience. One familiar smile which greets us as we wal into the office of Jackson High School is that o Carol Jean Johnson. Carol Jean not only is secre lary to Mr. Thornton, but also answer, the telephone. makes out the absent lists twice daily, an swer. questions from students, mimeographs tests and during the summer, makes out schedules. The men behind the scenes. Our Board of Education. They are busy men who are willing to give of their time and energy tb see that Jackson has good schools. For this they can be justly prou d. We. the student body, say thanks to you. One student from each home-room is elected to this efficient governing body of our high school. The members are elected for the purpose of maintaining a fine school. They are to keep up school spirit and to report any defects in the cogs of the curriculum. SducatioK After one year of service each member receives a medal. This medal is to signify that the bearer is a school citizen and should set an example for the other students. Tfatianal 'ZtoHa'i Society The National Honor Society was first instituted in Jackson High School in 1948. The standards are scholarship, leadership, character and service. It seems that with each activity, there has come a time when we have said with a touch of sorrow: This is the last one of which we will be a part. There was the last football game for the senior boys which was also the last one for the senior band members. Then at Christmas time, we sang in our final Carol Sing and so on into spring when came the Glee Club Concert and also the band concert, and with them the realization of the finality of our high school career. There were the never-to-be-forgotten parties, both formal and informal, which filled many happy hours and provided us with many memories. But. we realize that our happy, joyful moments have outnumbered the sad ones and the happy ones will remain with us always. The memory of the friends which we made during our school days will be forever cherished. As there must be an end to all good things, so it is with our high school days. But we as seniors are happy to have been a part of the Jackson High School and we know that we have gained much, and we trust that we have left an influence which may shine forth as a light to those who will follow in our steps. The loss of Gwyn is the loss of a friend, who was always jovial, always helpful, and always kind. Gwyn was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Gwyn Parry and would have been a sophomore at Jackson High School. He was a member of the Boys Glee Club, Oaky Wow Staff, and ranked high scholastically. He was also an active member of the Presbyterian Church. Our class will always remember Gwyn as a genuine all American youth who liked the finer things of life. FIRST ROW—Bob Bonaftl, Kenny Brodess, Monty Addis, Jackie Coy, Earl Beatty. We are fortunate to have the services of such a capable director as Robert Thorson, who has worked so diligently to produce a very fine band. The band is a perfect example of teamwork and cooperation, as it requires the best of each individual to prove a success, and certainly, it has been. There are, this year, 25 senior members who will wear the beautiful red and white uniforms and play Jackson High for the last time, but they have derived much from being a member of the oand. It has been said Music is love in search for a word. How true! Congratulations to the band of '52 for a job well done and we hope the future bands can do as well! VanFossen, who is the night janitor. Mr. Mercer first became a custodian at Jackson High School in September, 1944. He was a guide and a friend to everyone. Jackson High School’s grief was great when he died on the 26th of January, 1952. When we look back on our school days of 1952, our memories of Mr. Mercer will also come to mind. This trophy was presented to Bob Delong for outstanding sportsmanship during football games with Wellston and Oak Hill. Bob is a senior and member of the National Honor Society. He is an honor student and has earned letters in football, baseball and basketball this season. Jackson opened the 1951 football season with a loss at the hands of the bigger Greenfield- McClain team, 26-2. This was the first of three straight losses for the Ironmen. Then Jackson fell prey to Washington C. H., 33-6. Completing their losing streak, Jackson bowed to Gallipolis, 28-6. Winning their first game of the season, Jackson defeated Nelsonville, 12-0. Again falling into the losing column, Jackson dropped one to Athens, 12-6. Jackson won their second league game, rolling over Pomeroy 24-0. Tasting defeat once more, Jackson lost to Logan, 16-7. Then the Whisler-men lost a heart-breaker lo Oak Hill, 20-0. Jackson then lost to Middleport team, 26-7. Finally, Jackson fell to our biggest rivals, the Wellston Golden Rockets, 34-0. With 2-5 league record, Jackson wound up in fifth place. Max Henry, Orlan Farrar and Bill Eisnaugle made second team on the All Southeastern Team. W—Mr. Semple, Bob Humphreys. Middleport — 49 Jackson — 74 ............... Nelsonville — 79 Jackson — 45......................Athens — 48 Jackson had a successful season in basketball this year, taking second place. We were surpassed only by Nelsonville, who, not satisfied with the S.E.O. title, won the regional tournament at Athens. We split even in our first four games, losing two and winning two. After dropping one to Pomeroy, which surprised everybody. We rolled over Athens, Middleport and Nelsonville. Then we lost a non-leaguer to Ironton. Wellston, Gallipolis and Oak Hill were all taken in stride then, before losing a last minute heart-breaker to Logan. We won our next three games with Oak Hill, Athens and Middleport, but lost the big one to Nelsonville. In our last game, with Pomeroy, we came very close t o doing what all basketball teams dream of. We came within one point of getting one hundred points in a game! Whether or not it was the determination of those ten boys up there to show what a team they were and just what they could do, no one knows, but we do know we're proud of them. And we're even more proud of the fact that all five of our first team were chosen for all South-Eastern. Jim Metzger and Dave Fisher made first team. Dean Swingle and Bob Morgan second team, and Joel Poetker, third team. As usual, our reserves played a brand of basketball comparable to the varsity. In fact, they received second place in their bracket, just os the varsity did. Due, probably, to the disciplinary absence of three of their starters and one substitute, the reserves lost three heartbreakers, which, if won, would have spelled championship for them. However, we’re proud of them all and are looking forward to some good varsity material next year. ‘Sa4 et(t zlC The Freshman Football squad had a fair season with a win 2 - lose 2 record. They started off losing to Chillicothe and Wellslon. Jackson had plenty of spark during these two games, although they were up against terrific odds. The last half of the season pro red to be the best. The Freshman trimmed both ML Logan and McArthur. The squad was coached by Mr. Hugh Semple. k FIRST ROW—Judy Hurt!, Bonnie While, Rinalee Eitnaugle, Maryland Eubanks, Bobby Blake, Peggy Parker, Virginia Pierce, Juanita Henderson, Eleen Freeland.
