Bus. Mgr. H Lois Jenkins Adv' H We, of the 1950 Osky Wow Staff, take great pleasure in dedicating this hook to the members of the 1950 graduating class. Many people would say that this class is no different from any other class that has graduated from Jackson High School. In many respects, that is true: however, we feel that this class is the beginning of a new era. We are graduating in the middle of the century--a century that has been filled with progress. The student of today is the diplomat. scientist, doctor, and pioneer of tomorrow and whether his training is good or bad will determine whether or not the world will survive. We like our J.H.S. home and feel secure here. Through the portals of our school walk the finest people in the world. The bells of the building have rung in and rung out scores of boys and girls like us. We feel we owe a debt of gratitude to all those who contribute in making a school like this for us. In return, we hope our school will be a better one because of us who have crowded the halls of J.H.S. these few years. It's been wonderful, all of it-football and bas- ketball games, Girl Reserves and Hi-Y meetings. pep rallies, all-school dances. class plays - oh everything that makes a school year fun! We're sorry we have to leave but you can't stop time. We've made friends, had fun, played jokes, and learned our lessons but now we are graduating and leaving our school days behind us. We hope that the future classes of Jackson High School will hold high the standards which this year's graduat- ing class has set up. It is with these standards in mind that the Osky Wow Staff dedicates this year- book to the graduating class of l950. ezxnmuxns an-.fwqhwh Mr Daugherty Mr Daugherty has Just fmlshed hls fourth successful vear as Supermtendent of the Jackson schools He nas earned an AB de gree at R10 Grande and an MA at Ohlo State UHlV6fSlty Smce then he has completed work at Kent State and Oh1o Umverslty In 3ddlll0D to bemg a flne admmlstrator he lS an active leader m manv cxvxc functlons He IS a member of the followlng organlzatlons LIONS Club Readlng Club Farm Bureau Scott1sh Rlte of the Masons He IS on the executlve commlttee of both the Rotary Club and Red Cross He IS presldent of the County TB Assoclatxon and Crxppled Chlldren s Soclety Hls capablllty and mterest has endeared hlm to the students of the Jackson schools and to all the cxtlzens of Jackson UE SUPEIZIN ENDENT TQATION Mr. Thornton 1 Mr. Keairns One of the first persons you meet as you enter the high school is our very devoted and capable principal, Mr. Melbra Thornton. With sixteen years of service and achievement behind him, Mr. Thorn- ton can be justly proud of his outstanding record. Before receiving the position of principal, he served several years as a government teacher and a history teacher in our high school. His quiet and under- standing personality has endeared him to the fac- ulty and student body. One of the next persons you are sure to meet before you have gone very far is our most willing and capable assistant principal, Mr. E. S, Keairns. In addition to being assistant principal, Mr. Keairns teaches chemistry, physics and mathematics. Be- sides these duties, he is the advisor of the Osky Wow staff. It is realized that without his assistance and energy our book might not be published each year. We are fortunate to have such a friend and teacher on our staff. T' Carol johnson Annu Nail Of course you couldn't leave the building without meeting Anna Nail, secretary to Mr. Daugh- erty: and Carol Johnson, secretary to Mr. Thornton. We can never realize how much work they have to do. Writing absence slips, typing. filing, making out schedules and answering many questions from inquisitive students. They are known to all of the students for their kindness and helpfulness in an- swering questions and solving problems. These girls have much work to do in the summer as well as in the winter. It is hard to realize how they can do all their work so efficiently and we are sincerely grateful for all the tedious tasks they do for us. 1 s rn' if ARZELLA BAKER She xeceived hex AB if Rio Grande College .ind her M A de ree at Ohio State Umve sity She teaches English The Skeleton Her hobby is pl'1y mg the accordian and the piano an IQ 'wer 6 HAROLD BROWN He received his BS in Education from Ohio 'ind industrial arts His hobm is handicraft 9.-.al MERRILL DAVIS He received his BS in Education from Ohio supervisor and glee club director His hobby, is fishing and Sbanigh and is the advisor for University. I 1 , The Student Council was organized in the hope that it would help better the welfare of the school. This way the students would have equal represen- tation in the governing of their school. Each room selected a student with the qualifi- cations they thought best needed, to represent them in this student organization. These members heard the general problems of the students, encour- aged Clean sportsmanship, and helped promote scholarship. This student governing body is under the guid- ancc of Melbra Thornton whose job is to see that the decisions of the Student Council are carried out efficiently. Scholarship, leadership, character and service-these are the standards of the National Honor Society. The students, who are chosen by the faculty, must be in the up- per one-third of the senior class. They must also have the previous stated qualifications. This organization was first installed in the Jackson High School in 1948, Through these years it has helped the underclassman to improve himself so that he too might belong to this society some day. as 9'. qP', .3 Tm' QL A- . 'N Gone are the fears ot entering a new school buildin and makin the man new ac uaintances 9 3 Y Q - We have been busy with athletics. assemblies. par- ties and the many activities of a high school of to- day. We have not lost sight of our real purpose in school. We are planning courses and selecting sub- jects that will lead to our diplomas in 1953. We have participated in sports. and some of us have done very well. This year we elected Carol Ridge as our attendant to the Homecoming Queen. Some of our girls participated in the Hockey meet at Athens. We also had our tirst class Chapel program this year. The whole class depends on our advisor. Mr. Jones. who helped us with our party. which was a lot of fun. Then there were the Eisteddfod assemblies. and the various school activities that contribute to an eventful school year. So now it is all over, and we will soon be Sophomores. fzeaimen ROW 1-D. Arthur, C. Arnold, B. Albert, ROW 2-D. Boothe, Comer, Brown ROW 3- Collier, Clay. '- i-i. Y ' -' r ., f ' ' .. Much credit goes to these girls and to Miss Helen Ford. their sponsor. for their fine work. wwazr The Jackson High School's Ironmen squad of 1949 was a team full of pep and spirit which was acquired from our new coaches, Mr. Whisler and Mr. Tiefke. They have really produced some excel- lent changes, and the boys were very successful under their capable direction. We started our season after a few weeks of hard practices in a game with Greenfield McClain, which we easily won 25-B. We then won another game the following week with Washington C.H.. 32-6, which tied Jackson and Athens for the first place in the league. The following week we jour- neyed to Athens to settle that tie: but after sixty minutes of most spectacular playing, the game ended as a tie 13-13. Then we bounced back to win a game from Pomeroy, 21-7. followed by a tie with Logan, 19- 19 in a hard fought game. Next we snapped back to win a game with Oak Hill, 19-12. But then we dropped a game to Middleport, 26-6: and another to Gallipolis 13-7. But in our next game with Nelsonville that we won 32-0, we were the brilliant team that we were in the beginning. Our final game was our annual Thanksgiving game with Wellston, which we won 13-12. This wound up an exciting football season leaving us in fourth place in the league. The tour girls comprising the court were chosen from their classes respectively. They are Olwen Evans, Senior attendant: Nellie Simpson, Junior Attendant: Joan Miller.
