The plot revolves around the Popoff family and the Fry family who have been feuding for years because one of the Popoff boys said he was going out to shoot an old skunk one day and accidentally shot Paw Fry instead. Periodically Mountain Maggie, a legendary character who travels around the hills nursing the sick, must come to patch up someone hurt in the feud. Rosie Belle Fry, being handy with a gun, takes the only unattached male in the hills from her sister Emmy’s nose. Emmy, who'd like to get hitched, decides she II end up as an old maid if she doesn t get one of the Popoff boys. But how can she marry someone with whom her family is having a feud? She enlists the aid of Mountain Maggie, who’s tired of tending to victims of the feud, to put an end to it. Mountain Maggie, wise in the ways of human nature, convinces Maw Frv and Pappv Popoff that some plain sugar water she gives them is a love potion” which will make them fall in love. They are tired of being lone- ly and have just about decided to marry and end the feud, when Rosie Belle arrives with the news that it was all a trick. Once more the teud is going lull force. In the end, of course, the feud is ended and everybody is happy but not before there are quite a few merry mixups and ribtickling situations. H. Wilson Edna Coffey, Martha Colsher, Sylvia Cooper ALUMNI Jackson Township, now a part of Decatur County in the State of Indiana, was a part of the Northwest Territory. In 1816, when Indiana became a state, Decatur County was not on the map, being organized in 1822. When the organization of townships began. Jackson Township was not one of the first but was laid off later by taking a part from Clay and Sand- creek Townships. There is very little data relative to the earlier schools but. from various sources, the following story has been acquired. On October, 1834, three settlers of the northeast corner of Jackson met to consider the possibilities of a school. They conclu- ded. if they could get John McLeary, a young settler, to teach, they would build a schoolhouse. They found him hauling fodder from a little corn patch to a shed near his house. Here, by the side of this shed, the first school meeting in Jackson Township was held; he was hired at nine dollars per month. This salary was not exceeded for the next ten years. Within a few days a schoolhouse was completed, being made of logs roofed with clapboards, and heated by a large open fireplace with a stick and mud chimney. The floor was made of split logs and the windows were of greased paper placed on a crude frame. In 1839 section sixteen was sold at five dollars per acre. In a few years a little interest had accumulated which gave some public money. Although no authority seemed to exist for it. until 1851, three men were a committee that acted as a trustee in the administration of township schools. According to records, the first trustee was Amos Miller, elected in 1851. Before 1860 Sardinia was incorporated for school purposes. By 1863 there were eight district schools besides Sardinia with a total township school enrollment'of 606. representing 180 families. In 1867 Forest Hill, formerly Newburg, was incorporated. The five consolidated schools were Newburg. Waynesburg, Alert. Bighorn, and Sardinia. The building at Sardinia was con- structed in 1903. consisting of two rooms and having two teachers. An additional room was added about 1910. With the ex- tra room a third teacher was added. About 1902 the Alert Schoolhouse was finished; Waynesburg, and Newburg. came about two years later. The building at Newburg was built by adding a new room to an old one. Bighorn was constructed in the same fashion as the Newburg school and was completed in 1909. There were eighteen teachers in fourteen buildings in Jackson Township previous to 1900. Ten buildings consisted of one room each while four schools had two rooms with two teachers. An eighth grade course was taught until 1901 when a two year high was added. The five consolidated schools taught the two years of high school. After 1906 transportation was fur- nished. After 1908 school was taught only in the five consolidated schools, these being vacated when the new building was completed in 1923. The first commencement in Jackson High School was held on May 16, 1924. The event, in addition to marking an epoch in the history of education in Jackson Township and Decatur County, brought to a realization the struggle of years on the part of the people of southwestern Decatur County for a community center and consolidated township school. Nearly 700 residents of the community crowded into the new high school auditorium, demonstrating the community spirit of the citi- zens of the township and appreciating the significance of the historic occasion. The class of fifteen seniors which graduated was the largest of any of the township schools of Decatur County that year. 64 On the last day of school, at the noon hour, a community dinner was held in the school auditorium. Three long tables were stretched across the gymnasium and covers were laid for 425 pupils and patrons. The grade schools at Alert. Waynesburg, Forest Hill, and Sardinia came in school buses for the occasion. The dinner was a surprise to Professor H. H. Wilson and members of the faculty. The afternoon was spent in games. Commencement came as a climax to the day’s activities. The music was furnished by the Jackson Community Orchestra consisting of the following members: Mrs. Charles D. Owens, Claude M. Oliver, Marvin Davis, Dolph Thurston, Gale Pailer. Frank Crise. A male quartet composed of Glenn Welch, Claude Welch, Dallas Brunton, and Barrett Davis sang several num- bers. Other selections were a solo by Frank Crise and the “Sailor Song” by a group of mixed voices. The address of the eve- ning was given by Judge Charles J. Orbison. The class of 1927 was the largest ever to graduate from Jackson High School having twenty-four members. This class was the First to complete the four year high school course in the new building. The class of 1948 was the smallest class ever to leave the halls of Jackson with nine members. There are only two girls in the class. The class of 1931 had two girls in a class of twelve. The total number of graduates to leave Jackson School and face the hazards of life are 693. The class of 1968 was the largest ever to graduate from JHS having twenty-six members. This class was the last of the 45 classes to complete their education at JHS. For many years there have been school songs and the traditional colors of black and gold at JHS. The following are our school song and alma mater. Fight, fight for Jackson’s name. Fight, fight for thee. Go forward to the state. We must have victory. Rah Rah Rah Bring that ball to the net. Bring Jackson fame. Bring honor to our name. So fight, you Tigers, fight, you Tigers, fight. Go! Tigers, go! Go! Tigers, go! We’re here again To see you win. Go! Tigers, go! Jackson High School in thy honor, Now to thee we stand, For the joy and leadership that we all have gained. To your colors. Black and Gold, And to the Tigers too, Jackson High School, Alma Mater, We will always be true. -Fred Prescott The Junior and Senior High schools of Burney, Sandcreek, and Jackson have now consolidated to form South Decatur High School. The building was completed in 1968 and is located between Letts and Westport on State Road 3. Nineteen-hundred and sixty-eight marks the end of many long and memorable years at Jackson, but holds promises for a happy and exciting future at South Decatur High School. 65 CLASS OF 1924 John Banister, Dorothy Rudiccl Bowman, Mable May Corbett, Russell Gorbett, Amy Bees- ley.
