Two members of that class were competing for the big money, so the other seven had made a great effort to get there to see the show. It was still the same old bunch, although ten years had made some drastic changes in some of them I could hardly believe my eyes when a good looking fellow came up to shake hands with me and offered me his card, saying that he was running for Governor in the coming election, and would I support him? Of course, I would, for it was none other than Hayne Johnson, and after I talked to him awhile, I could ses that he really hadn't changed so much, it was his white hair that made him look so different He must have known what was going through my mind as I kept glancing at his white locke, for he went on to say that he had had an unusually interesting life during the past ten years he had been coaching the Jackson basketball team for the past six years, and with much success but in tha Spring of '59 some one had suggested nutting our a Jackson Annual, and just the thoughts of it turned his hair snow white, almost over night Hubert Hhooten was another one that I could hardly recognize s he is really chubby now 'Hhootie' was much on the hefty side when in school, but decided shortly after graduation to slim up a bit managed to get down to 120 pounds by s strenuous diet and many turkish baths, but said he couldn't see that he looked so pretty, slim, so why not eat and be happier He now tips the scales at 470 Pounds and 'BYU he surely is glad, for he has a life time contract with Ringling Brothers Circus, and lakes plenty of money the easy way, just by merely letting people look at him Now Norman looks just as he always did, not a day older, and he nearly talks a person down Norman was always inclined to be studious fellow in school, and so made school his life career H is a history instructor i a big university now, and the students all like him very much the only thing, he talks all of the time and hard ly gives the students a chance to get a word in ed ewise He married a history teacher fron a neighboring college, and I've been told that they just talk history from morning till night But it was Charles Sanders who was in the limelight that day, for he drove under the checkered flag in first position I was re l thrill to see that honor goin to Charlie, for I guess he had had his heart set on it for several years It seems that back as early as the fall of 1947 he did some practicing over near Hnrtsvllle I didn't get to talk to h1m as he was so occuppied with news reporters, and photographers, but Wayne Johnson said, as far as he knew, this great desire for the speedway began around Hallowe'en of that year Rosemary Johnson was a competitor for the Speedway purse, but didn't make the turn on the south end and rode right out into the parking lot before she stopped She hopped out of the racer and shrugging her shoulders, said to le ve it p rked for it was too late to catch up now and the money was all she was after anyway Rosie came on up to the grandstand and watched the rest of the performance, and looked as cute as ever, even if she was dressed in a blue shirt and blue jeans, with the shirt tail out, and when going got close she came out with 'Hit e again hit em again harder harder' for Charlie Rosemary has a good job doing singing commercials on the radio, but said she just thought it would be fun to be driving for the big money once Halter Jayne had to leave before the race was over, for you know how it is on a farm Halter always had liked a farm oh yes, he used to 'blow off' when he was a mere child in school, and say that the year after graduation wouldn't find him on a farm, but ten years after graduation he hurries home to his farm and 23 cows If he really WN JO' V Y. 1 go iii' 'Q-.J .Z -' x -PZ xff. . . There really is plenty of money in it, so welter says, and from all appear- ances he must have it. Now where Halter is, we expect to find Bernice, and sure enough there they were together. This happened to be the first time they had been together for ouite some time tho, as Bernice has been working on some movie contracts in Hollywood, and has been really busy. It seems that Marjorie Main got wind of what a good job of being 'Grandma' Bernice had done in the class play, and sent for her immedi tely to be her understudy After working with Hargorie for a picture Bernice got a part of her own, and has done two recent pictures She says that she likes the motion picture wor a lot, but she just can't seem to get walter off her mind we are all wondering Just whether there will be an engagement announced in the near future or not as they were pretty occupied with each other during this meeting at the Speedway, but after he left someone heard Be nice murmur to herself, '23 cows Oh no' I'd almost as soon crank e mimeograoh, as come to that' Bill Wilkinson went to Washington, D C and has a position the Bureau of Printing and Pngrsving He makes dollar bills, and turns then out by the thou nds He seems to be gettlng tired of tho, says that he ignlt nakxng enough money, and even hints that may cone back to Alert to l1ve His wife is the cllnglng vine type and doesn't f1t in w1th the Weshlngton, D C society at all She wasn't with Bill, so we didn't get to meet her, but he said excitement a e her so nervous that h wouldn't think a ing h r t Speedway I gues they went to a basketball game last winter, and she became s panicky and hysterical, for fear the boys would hurt each other, that Bill had to take her home at the end of the first quarter Billy McClintic came along and added the color for the group, the McClintics an their nine red headed boys lined up in the bleachers Bill and Mary had three little red he ds of their own, but Bill said a fellow douldn't make e ball team out of three, s they adopted six more who says Jackson Tigers won't contlnue to have win n1ng teams down through the years? I didn't ask wh t B1ll's occupa t1on was, but I could see that he was livlng a colorful life, and it shouldn't be dull, with nine boys to ral e, and s I looked then all over while they sat in the bleachers at the big Memorial Day Races, I Could see that this story would end as all good novels d they lived happily ever after CLASS WILL Norman Hamilton, will my ability to learn jokes to Howard Lewis Walter Jayne, will my ability as an actor to Donald Gray Wayne Johnson, will my neat apperance to Don Castor, and my swoon ing voice to Howard Lewis.
