When the organization of townships began, Jackson Township was not one of the first five but was laid off later by taking a part from Clay and Sandcreek Townships There is very little data relative to the earlier schools but, from various sources, the following story has been acouired October 1874 three settlers f the northeast corner of Jackson met to consider the possibilities of a school They concluded, if they could get John WgLeary a young settler to te h, they would build a schoolhouse They found him hauling fodder from a little corn patch to s shed near his house Here, by the side of this shed the first school meeting in Jackson Township was held, he was hired at nine dollars per monthe This salary was not exceeded for the next ten years wlth1H a few days schoolhouse was COmDl0ted,be1nv made of logs roofed with clapboards, and heated by e large open flreplcce with a stick and mud chimney The floor was made of split logs and the windows were of greased paper placed on a crude frame In 1839 section sixteen was sold at five dollars per acre In a few years a little interest had accumulated which gave S0 le public money Although no authority seemed to exlst for it unt11 1851, three men were committee that acted trus ee in e administration of township schools According to records, the fi st trustee was A'nos Miller, elected in 1851 Before 1860 Sardinia was incorporated for school purposes By 1803 there were eight district schools besides Sardinia with a total township school enrollment f 606 representing 180 families Newburg, was incorporated 1867 Forest Hill formerly The five consolidated schools were Newburg, Waynesburg, Alert, Bighorn, and Sardinia The building at Sardinia was constructed 1903, consisting of two rooms and having two teachers An additional roon was added about 1910 With the extra roon a third teacher was added About 1902 the Alert Schoolhouse was finished, Waynesburg and Newburg came about two years later The building at Newburg was built by adding a new room to an old one Bighorn was constructed in the same fashion as the Newburg school and was completed in 1909 There were eighteen teachers in fourteen buildings in Jackson Township prevlous to 1900 Ten buildings consi ted of one room each wh1le four scnools h d two rooms with two teachers An eight grade course was taught until 1901 when a two year hlvh was added lhe flve consolidated schools taught the two years of high school After 1906 transportation was furnished After 1908 school was taught only in the five consolidated schools these belng vacated when the new The first connencement in Jackson High School was held on May 16, 1924 The event in addition to marking an eooch in the h1story of education i Jackson Township and Dec tur County, realization the struggle of years the pert of southwestern Decatur County for a connunitf center and consolidated township school Nearly 700 residents of the conmunity crowded into the new high school auditorium, demonstrating the conmunity spirit f the citizens of the township and appreciating the significance of the historic occasion The class of fifteen seniors which graduated was the largest of any of the year brought to the people of township schools of Decatur County that fad 'b ik rx -5' Y4 Ya. Namelyx Adams, Lois Hamilton, Norman McClintic, Bill Anderson Vilma Jean Johnson, Rosemary Robbins, James S ott, J T Sims, Mary Jo Thurston, Mary Jane Taylor, Roy Brewer Marie Johnson, Wayne Dooper Garnet Kenady, Rhed Jr Fear Dor Klipsch, Ray Gray, Donald In the first six years tnere were many changes took place lost a number of our origlnal enrollment, but we also gained a number of new menbers, until our class was both larger and about evenly divided as to girls and boys we never took studying too serlously He glrls naturally thomght our little love affairs were much more important while the boys, ll, they were entirely overwhelmed by 'ball' But we do owe our boys much honor for their splendid ball knowledge They won for us the grade tournament during our Junior Hi years, and had their part i winning our County Tourney our Senior year So why shouldn't we glrls be proud of them? In the fall of '42 we met up with ourselves as we entered Junior Hlgh This was the climax of our lives For at this polnt we learned how little we really knew and how much we had to know to be able to master tho e terrible problems the Hi School teachers confronted us with each day But we were not bo be outdone, we buckled down to it, did some real studying at least put in hours of tlme and came out w1th flying colors Next September started the school year a green little Freshies and we mean greenl, for we were green enough to thlnk we could tell all the Hi School what to do, even the teachers But did we get set back' Some of us never have survived the shock Even Castor ruit school because he couldn't tell the teachers what he was go ng to d But after thinklng it over he decided maybe they were right after all, so he came back and tried it over and made good Finally we reached our Junlor Year A year we can never forget! It wa this year that we really had heartachas lmore kind than one mlsunderstsndings, and what we thought could be called real hardshlps We wanted to give the Senlor Class the greatest 'Senior Day' recorded 1n Jackson History We th1 k we d1d, too J We at least got them to the 'Cincy Zoo where they were made to realize all their ancestors were not de d Then, we began to look forward to our 'Senior Day On September 3, 1947 we entered on our last round up Our school days as a wnole were 'haoay mexories' However, there are three events we would llke to er se from our sheet We felt our great loss when Mr Fulton could not help us bring our flnal round up to a close, as he had done so faithfully ln almost every senior class preceding ours, then we had the misfort ne of losing two of our members in death, namely uarnet Cooper and Ray Klipsch But Mr Oliver, our class sponsor took us under hls w1ng and the nlna of us left were very thankful to h1m for his kind help, many good sugfe tions and e pecially for his patience he showed in endurlng tho e many trywng hours In the first semester of our senior year two of our senlor girls left us Mary Ellen Smith moved to North Vernon n oo p her school work there Mary Jo Sims decided school didn't g1ve her enough work to do so she signed un w1th the Joblett Sparks Porporation F rf-we :N 4 -fir xii.:- L' gh 0,5-,h ,. sf! f 'i' , up an 'ik ,- A ff lx, qv U ID L W Q if ' vii rw 5,114 'f- ' 1.1 4 ' -i'f9.'y1,I r.- -15 , F l A-iqhfq 1 x Q.. Two members of that class were competing for the big money, so the other seven had made a great effort to get there to see the show. It was still the same old bunch, although ten years had made some drastic changes in some of them I could hardly believe my eyes when a good looking fellow came up to shake hands with me and offered me his card, saying that he was running for Governor in the coming election, and would I support him? Of course, I would, for it was none other than Hayne Johnson, and after I talked to him awhile, I could ses that he really hadn't changed so much, it was his white hair that made him look so different He must have known what was going through my mind as I kept glancing at his white locke, for he went on to say that he had had an unusually interesting life during the past ten years he had been coaching the Jackson basketball team for the past six years, and with much success but in tha Spring of '59 some one had suggested nutting our a Jackson Annual, and just the thoughts of it turned his hair snow white, almost over night Hubert Hhooten was another one that I could hardly recognize s he is really chubby now 'Hhootie' was much on the hefty side when in school, but decided shortly after graduation to slim up a bit managed to get down to 120 pounds by s strenuous diet and many turkish baths, but said he couldn't see that he looked so pretty, slim, so why not eat and be happier He now tips the scales at 470 Pounds and 'BYU he surely is glad, for he has a life time contract with Ringling Brothers Circus, and lakes plenty of money the easy way, just by merely letting people look at him Now Norman looks just as he always did, not a day older, and he nearly talks a person down Norman was always inclined to be studious fellow in school, and so made school his life career H is a history instructor i a big university now, and the students all like him very much the only thing, he talks all of the time and hard ly gives the students a chance to get a word in ed ewise He married a history teacher fron a neighboring college, and I've been told that they just talk history from morning till night But it was Charles Sanders who was in the limelight that day, for he drove under the checkered flag in first position I was re l thrill to see that honor goin to Charlie, for I guess he had had his heart set on it for several years It seems that back as early as the fall of 1947 he did some practicing over near Hnrtsvllle I didn't get to talk to h1m as he was so occuppied with news reporters, and photographers, but Wayne Johnson said, as far as he knew, this great desire for the speedway began around Hallowe'en of that year Rosemary Johnson was a competitor for the Speedway purse, but didn't make the turn on the south end and rode right out into the parking lot before she stopped She hopped out of the racer and shrugging her shoulders, said to le ve it p rked for it was too late to catch up now and the money was all she was after anyway Rosie came on up to the grandstand and watched the rest of the performance, and looked as cute as ever, even if she was dressed in a blue shirt and blue jeans, with the shirt tail out, and when going got close she came out with 'Hit e again hit em again harder harder' for Charlie Rosemary has a good job doing singing commercials on the radio, but said she just thought it would be fun to be driving for the big money once Halter Jayne had to leave before the race was over, for you know how it is on a farm Halter always had liked a farm oh yes, he used to 'blow off' when he was a mere child in school, and say that the year after graduation wouldn't find him on a farm, but ten years after graduation he hurries home to his farm and 23 cows If he really WN JO' V Y. 1 go iii' 'Q-.J .Z -' x -PZ xff. . . There really is plenty of money in it, so welter says, and from all appear- ances he must have it. Now where Halter is, we expect to find Bernice, and sure enough there they were together. This happened to be the first time they had been together for ouite some time tho, as Bernice has been working on some movie contracts in Hollywood, and has been really busy. It seems that Marjorie Main got wind of what a good job of being 'Grandma' Bernice had done in the class play, and sent for her immedi tely to be her understudy After working with Hargorie for a picture Bernice got a part of her own, and has done two recent pictures She says that she likes the motion picture wor a lot, but she just can't seem to get walter off her mind we are all wondering Just whether there will be an engagement announced in the near future or not as they were pretty occupied with each other during this meeting at the Speedway, but after he left someone heard Be nice murmur to herself, '23 cows Oh no' I'd almost as soon crank e mimeograoh, as come to that' Bill Wilkinson went to Washington, D C and has a position the Bureau of Printing and Pngrsving He makes dollar bills, and turns then out by the thou nds He seems to be gettlng tired of tho, says that he ignlt nakxng enough money, and even hints that may cone back to Alert to l1ve His wife is the cllnglng vine type and doesn't f1t in w1th the Weshlngton, D C society at all She wasn't with Bill, so we didn't get to meet her, but he said excitement a e her so nervous that h wouldn't think a ing h r t Speedway I gues they went to a basketball game last winter, and she became s panicky and hysterical, for fear the boys would hurt each other, that Bill had to take her home at the end of the first quarter Billy McClintic came along and added the color for the group, the McClintics an their nine red headed boys lined up in the bleachers Bill and Mary had three little red he ds of their own, but Bill said a fellow douldn't make e ball team out of three, s they adopted six more who says Jackson Tigers won't contlnue to have win n1ng teams down through the years? I didn't ask wh t B1ll's occupa t1on was, but I could see that he was livlng a colorful life, and it shouldn't be dull, with nine boys to ral e, and s I looked then all over while they sat in the bleachers at the big Memorial Day Races, I Could see that this story would end as all good novels d they lived happily ever after CLASS WILL Norman Hamilton, will my ability to learn jokes to Howard Lewis Walter Jayne, will my ability as an actor to Donald Gray Wayne Johnson, will my neat apperance to Don Castor, and my swoon ing voice to Howard Lewis. The trustee has been very generous to our school. He has repaired the class bell system and installed an electric program clock. A new maroon velour front curtain for the stage was purchased to replace the one that had served the school so well for twenty three years. Storm windows have been placed on the west side of the school building. These and a new sto- ker have made the building more comfortable and have provided a saving in fuel. Two new drinking fountains have been placed near the supply tank, thus providing cooler drinking water. The home economics room has been partitioned to make a separate kitchen for the school lunch program. A new sink was installed, and built-in cabinets were placed in both rooms. nw. . :':.
