FOREWQRD Never among any people was the zeal for learning so intense and so universal as it was among the ancient Greeks. During the Persian occupation of Athens in 480 B.C., while the Athenians found refuge on neighboring islands and watched as their city burned, they saw to it that their children lost hardly a day of school. A good education was a requirement for citizenship, and the Greeks followed religiously a cur- riculum designed to make of their people capable citizens, strong leaders, and enlightened individuals. The duty of the Athenian teacher was to develop in his stu- dents an appropriate balance of physical and mental strength, to produce a citizen trained to serve himself and his fellows to the best of his ability. To the Greeks, education was a means to an important end and not an end in itself. Our own educational system has followed this tradition. We, too, have realized that an education is not only book-learning: it is the application of our educational experiences to our daily lives. We, too, have learned to place emphasis on the total development of the individual, an-d the chief goal of today's teachers is to build men and women who can use their talents to fulfill their own needs and the needs of their com- munities. DELPHIAN, this year, has chosen the Greek ideal of a sound mind in a sound body as its theme for this issue. We hope you like it. THE EDITORS 2

DEDICATION The ancient Greeks were ' fortunate in having Nes- tor, a Wise and experi- enced teacher, to Whom they could turn during times of perplexity and in- decision. During the Tro- jan War his advice was sought by the Greek Coun- cil, and the blind poet Homer Praises Nestor in the Ilaid for his great intel- ligence. In the centuries since he has become the symbol of the wise instructor: even today Nestor is used to describe an experienced teacher. We, like the Greeks, have had our own Nestor. For the thirty-four years of Jackson junior College's ex- istence he has served its students with sound in- struction and wise counsel. This book is dedicated to Wilfred P. Rayner, teacher, advisor, friend. 3
