JAYK ON JUNIORCOHEGE FOREWQRD Never among any people was the zeal for learning so intense and so universal as it was among the ancient Greeks. During the Persian occupation of Athens in 480 B.C., while the Athenians found refuge on neighboring islands and watched as their city burned, they saw to it that their children lost hardly a day of school. A good education was a requirement for citizenship, and the Greeks followed religiously a cur- riculum designed to make of their people capable citizens, strong leaders, and enlightened individuals. The duty of the Athenian teacher was to develop in his stu- dents an appropriate balance of physical and mental strength, to produce a citizen trained to serve himself and his fellows to the best of his ability. To the Greeks, education was a means to an important end and not an end in itself. Our own educational system has followed this tradition. We, too, have realized that an education is not only book-learning: it is the application of our educational experiences to our daily lives. We, too, have learned to place emphasis on the total development of the individual, an-d the chief goal of today's teachers is to build men and women who can use their talents to fulfill their own needs and the needs of their com- munities. DELPHIAN, this year, has chosen the Greek ideal of a sound mind in a sound body as its theme for this issue. We hope you like it. THE EDITORS 2 DEDICATION The ancient Greeks were ' fortunate in having Nes- tor, a Wise and experi- enced teacher, to Whom they could turn during times of perplexity and in- decision. During the Tro- jan War his advice was sought by the Greek Coun- cil, and the blind poet Homer Praises Nestor in the Ilaid for his great intel- ligence. In the centuries since he has become the symbol of the wise instructor: even today Nestor is used to describe an experienced teacher. We, like the Greeks, have had our own Nestor. For the thirty-four years of Jackson junior College's ex- istence he has served its students with sound in- struction and wise counsel. This book is dedicated to Wilfred P. Rayner, teacher, advisor, friend. 3 PQNLTYE I ' ... f I Amiga' . 'I Roses are red Flowers are keen: Look, Mr. Preston! Your thumb has turned green! Transistors, anyone? Mr. Barbour is never happier than when he is up to his condensers in electronic problems. Around the World in 80 Days. Rather fast, but it is what you see that counts and Miss Hill loves it. Take 1 portion peace and 2 cups of quiet. After adding 1 pair slippers and 1 pipe, blend well. Then add a book, and bake well at room temperature. Result: 1 evening for Dr. Davidson. A rnan's best friend is his bug. Mr. Whiting has many colorful, delicate and dead bug friends. Sound and fury, but mostly sound is Mr. Masters do-it-yourself hi-fi project. Chemically speaking, bridge is 4015 by Weight a mixture of fun and relaxation and 60172, work. To win his many trophies, Mr. Anderson skillfully combined these. Still not too old for dolls, Mrs. Casey makes it a hobby to col- lect them from all over the world. 6 l Eight ball in the side pocket: this is the cue for pool shark Gillett to rack up another apparently im- possible shot. King of the collectors: Mr. K's stack of platters covers the spec- trum from Mozart to Mantovani. Not one to merely string along, Miss Cooper plays second fiddle to no one in the jackson Sym- phony Orchestra. Letting his Indian blood run free, Mr. Hampton creates another piece of pottery. But how! 5 f SVU' f . 7 A stitch in time: Miss Lineburg escapes academic tensions by work- ing out intricate patterns in nee- dle-point. Because it's there: top-rated moun- tain climber Norris will go a great deal further than most of us to get away from it all. Lowbrow, highbrow, Disbrowz Mr. D's reading tastes range from Shakespeare to Spillane, from Christia to Kafka. . . . While Mr. Rayner leans to erudite essays on speech and com- munications. Mr. Rossman keeps his slipstick sliding. Mr. de Maagd, the happy wander- er, turns to nature for his form of relaxation. Round and round may make some people dizzy, but Mr. Sussell is only more enthralled by records. Patience, skill and a keen eye: Mr. Dungy eyes photomicrography as a real hobby. The cry, Get a horse! doesn't faze Mr. Snyder, the rnan on the flying wheels. Playing organ by ear? Dr. Taylor finds it more fun and rewarding to play by hand. Music of the Masters: the key to recreating a portrait in sound. History, .history everywhere is just the way Mr. Barnett likes it. Miss DeMeyer has traveling tastes and a strong penchant for Paris. Come in, KETOUV' It's the voice of Mr. B. Riggs, no ham when it comes to ham radio. Smilin' jack K. and Mr. R. Riggs: a political pair who are hard to vote down at the polls. Miss I-Iarcling's happiest when she can spend her spare time with a paintpot and brushes. in i - 1 1 1 Miss Holton: time, taste, and a delicate touch produce another of her masterpieces in needlepoint. Much of Dr. Laursen's leisure goes into his magnificent collectionhof old and rare Scandinavian books. Mr. Do-It-Yourself Howell does it himself. California, Alahamag Oklahoma, Arizona: Dean Dove plots his next trip. Mrs. Cluley enjoys drama, and she deserves an Emmy for her devoted help to the Players Club of j.j.C. ' Michelangelo, Mantegna, Maffei: Mr. M. is J.J.C.'s one-man Renais- SHIICC. Basketball may be a rather seasonal hobby, but Mr. Eicher doesn't dribble around when the season's OH... . . . while the season's always on where Mrs. Kelly is concerned. Roughing it is not so rough as long as you know which side of the tree the moss grows on. Mr. Ritter does. Knit one, purl two is the combina- tion that could pull the wool over your eyes, claims Mrs. Bannasch. 4 i 9 Lost: one dropped stitch. Finder please return to Miss Barbara Fausell. Reward. just for the record: Mr. Graves should be recorded as at man inter- ested in recorders. Miss Englebright: She likes Venice in the Springtime, she likes Lon- don in the Fall. She likes Zurich in the Winter, she likes Jackson best of all. Some people see the world through rose colored glasses. Mr. Van Pernis sees it through a twin-lens reflex. '1 A stamp of approval goes to Mr. Wendt, J.j.C.'s foremost philate- list. From one apprentice to another. Mr. Ollila is kept jumping placing young men in positions to learn the skilled trades. From her sewing, Mrs. Gork reaps a harvest of beautiful clothing. Her hobby keeps her.reeling. Mrs. Eyler is a real enthusiast over her own home movies. The plain facts are that Mr. Ogden wouldn't just hammer away at any old thing, he's a man of his wood. Miss Schultz has a budding hobby that takes a real talent to do a bloomin' thing with. Miss Gibson: she takes delight in collecting brass. Dr. Atkinson is her hubby but she is his hobby. 1?v ..
