Under the leadership of President Clinton Carter. class members were found participating in many school activities from clubs to sports. A successful T-shirt sale provided funds for class expenses. Several members of JC-M's middle class got their first taste of timed tests as they took the PSAT and NMSQT: these preliminaries lessened students' fears of the ACT and SAT which they would face as Seniors. With concentrated effort and cooperation from its members. the Junior class enjoyed a very successful year. One of the greatest tasks these students faced was that of becoming a unified group. Having come from the three junior high schools where there had been rivalries in athletics as well as in other areas of school life. students realized that they must now forget past differences and join together. With the election of capable officers. class members began to work together. As the year progressed. the Sophomores became a part of every activity at JC-M: and by the end of the year the class of l980 had attained an identity all its own. lrish Agnew Vickie Allen Karen Alred Bernard Anders .lo Ann Anderson MarluAnderson Tammy Anderson Angie Argo Kathy Armstrong Michael.Arnold Laura Atkins Betsy Bailey Christine Baker lfranlt Ballard Kevin Bankston Ruehen Barbour Michael Barnes Joe Barnette Vernadean Barnette Beth Barnette Deborah Bates 'Q 80 X Sophomores Sophomore Class Secretary' Sharon Hunt and President Mark Marsh ill '17 Ps, ,,,4 :- X :X 0- 'Z 1--iv Andrxx Beard Dunne Bcurrl Irucy Beard John Beam: Betsy Bull Phll Bell Mike BlChL'I'NlilH. Coming off a winning year. the girls entered District l3AAA play: winning the first game there. the girls advanced to regional action. Throughout the year. the forwards were led by outstanding Senior Pat Anderson. with assist- ance from Sara Rhodes. Guard Gloria Werthing continued to pull down the rebounds and Voresa Croom brought the ball down the court. The boys were consistently out-sized by their opponents. but they managed to come through with important wins when they were needed. As they entered District I3 AAA competition. the Cougars seemed to come alive and defeated a tough Covington team to advance to the Regionals. Throughout the season Greg Glenn and Mike Martindale proved to be the big guns for the Cougars. ROYALTY One of the most impor- tant parts of Homecoming is the presentation of roy- alty: this year was certainly no exception as the cele- brated event rolled around once more. 'l'he girls selected as members of both the football and basketball homecoming courts were chosen by the respective teams on the basis of their support of each sport. Escorts for the girls this year were Don Wilson. Xavier Butler. Ricky Mur- phy. and Max Aldrich. for football. and Mike Martin- dale. David Murphy. Don Mcforkle. and Lester Har- vey for basketball. Sports X l I3 The Tennis teams were once again as powerful as ever for 1978. Under the direction of Coach Don Newman, nominated for Tennis Coach of the Year by the TSSAA. the teams were sparked by hopes for a successful season. Both the boys' and girls' teams were well balanced with many returning players offering experience and superb playing ability. The teams practiced hard throughout the winter although the snow put a damper on most outdoor practice sessions. Leading the girls' team was Senior Debbie Ward. along with newcomer Fran Spencer. Meanwhile. Joel Edwards. Franklin Murchi- son. and Matt Ingham vol- leyed hard for the boys' team. 'lA f Qnnrfa TENNI The I978 Lady Netters. left to right, kneeling: Anne Benton, Debbie Ward. Jackie Beard returned this year to add his expertise and expe- rience to the overall team's abilities. Sports X l I7 CROSS COU TRY Completing their third season at JC-M. the Cross Country team once again met stiff competition from this area. The All Senior Crossroads Staff Members quickly learned that publishing a yearbook is no easy job. Hours were spent in planning sessions with the goal of making Volume VIII of the Crossroads the best ever. Soon came the drudgery of scheduling photographic sessions, drawing layouts and writing copy. The calendar was an ever-present devil as deadlines approached fand the snows fellj. When the book was finally completed and sent to the publisher, the staff had a few days of rest. But soon it was back to work, solving the prob- lems of distributing books to the more than 800 purchasers, 400 of whom had changed their first period location since purchase date. After it was all over, staff members agreed that theirs had been a unique experience with a lot of hard work and a little fun, too.
