And so we, the Class of '65, enter the bustling, bustling world of the 20th Century to witness the mar- vels of the Atomic Age, undreamed of by teenagers a century ago, constantly striving toward our goals and dreaming of the past. As 350 students and 25 teachers entered the halls of Jackson Central in the fall, each of them started to take a step which would lead a step further in their lives and educations. These steps took them to homecomings, the Halloween party, class plays, soc hops, club meet- ings, athletic contests, classes, the Christmas dance, final exams, the Junior-Senior Prom, Baccalaureate, and finally Commencement. For the seniors of 1965, these steps paved the end of the beginning. We were led to colleges, to homes, to jobs, and to the Armed Forces of the United States. The underclassmen will be led to a new school called Hamilton Heights, the consolidated high school of Jackson and White River Townships. Many steps await the underclassmen as they prepare to go out and seek their fortunes. These steps will lead many different ways as they all enter different fields of business and education. As the steps bring the students to a close of the 1964- 1965 school year, they can look back and see the many activities in which they have participated. They can also look forward and see that the consolidation of Jackson Central and Wal- nut Grove is another step forward in their education So we, the Class of '65, picturing the world of our future through the eyes ofbio-chemists, house- wives, psychologists, teachers, laboratory tech- nicians, doctors, and coaches, say, So long, Jackson Central. We will never forget you. Where illiteracy exists, there exists the iron claw of Communism. The students visualize the world of their future, the product of a good high school education and four years well spent. The 3 R's no longer compose the normal cur- riculum. Well-rounded students must acknowledge the world around them through such studies as foreign languages, history, government, and sci- ence. Although they may dislike homework, tests, and term papers, they will forever be thankful to the teachers who cared enough to make them learn. LANGUAGE, THE CORNERSTONE OF NATIONS, BUILDS Mrs. Wiseman patiently assists the members of her junior English class. Mrs. Recobs demonstrates the operation of the tacomatic machine to Linda Day. N81 Personification, alliteration, prepositional phrases. These are just a few of the new expressions introduced to the English students this year. While the seniors struggled with Macbeth, the freshmen enjoyed Great Expectations. The juniors presented Our Town in class while the sophomores staged Julius Caesar and The Miracle Worker. All classes also participated in the Vocabulary Workshop and Developmental Reading programs, as well as writing several themes each semester. The new tachomatic machine helped students in- crease their reading speeds and comprehensions, while the vocabulary exercises enlarged the students' use of words. With four years of English required, the students oflackson Central are well prepared for their step into the world of words. HIGH IDEALS AND NE W IDEAS Although most students know some foreign phrases, the student who has completed two years of a foreign language has mastered many more new and strange expressions. Frenchl and Spanish Il were added to the Cur- riculum this year. Latin was again a popular subject with over forty students learning about ancient civil- izatrons. Although many of the students who attempted to master these trying languages will not use their speak- ing knowledge to a great extent, they have learned much about the cultures of these countries. Junior Lee Ann Coy models an example of ancient Roman dress, as worn by all members to the Latin Banquet. Mrs. Davis checks on some French grammar as students present their work. Pam Spidel and Laurel Chandler point out scenic spots on some Spanish travel posters. .lCHS'ERS TAKE MANY STEPS TO DISCOVER Which wheels are turning in the heads of these juniors? Scientific experimentation is the basis for learning in a laboratory science. All Americans are affected directly or indirectly by the birth of the Space Age. We are now living in a world unheard of 40 years ago. How many people could visualize the rockets and cars that are second nature to us? Many of the famous scientists and mathematicians had their beginnings in little red school houses. A1- though we no longer attend little red school houses, many students are receiving instruction which may make future inventors or great scientists of them. The new math room equipment installed last sum- r mer is the pride and joy of Mr. Henricks. i201 Mr. Keesleing's patience never ends in his teaching Linda Faulstich and other biology students become of algebra . experts of the microscope. SECRETS OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE What's cooking, Laurel? Laurel Chandler experiments with heated sulfur. A four-year mathematics course starts with begin- ning algebra and advances to geometry, advanced algebra, and trigonometry with emphasis on practical mathematics. Knowledge of space will come through efficiency in mathematics. The teaching of mathe- matics is simplified by the addition of the new mathe- matics room, the only one of its kind in Hamilton County. Science courses vary from physical science, bio- logy, and advanced biology to chemistry and physics taught in the well-equipped biology and chemistry laboratories. Intelligence in physics, physical sci- ence, and chemistry will help to produce a rocket ship and get it into space, but knowing biology and advanced biology will be necessary for life in space. The proper teaching ofscience and mathematics will create the success or failure of our Jackson Township community in the Space Age. E211 ELECTION '64 KEPT STUDENTS GUESSING Seniors Candi James and Bob Henderson are shown here in a friendly political argument during the election. The election of 1964 played a big part in the gov ernment and history classes this year. The senior government classes made scrapbooks of the Election Day results and the events leading up to them. The students of JCHS held a mock election, and President Johnson and Senator Humphrey emerged victorious over Republicans Goldwater and Miller in a landslide vote as it was on the national level. After the election, the classes continued their usual studies in United State government, United States history, and world history. The inauguration of President Johnson was an- other highlight ofthe year, as many students watch- ed the event from start to finish via television. At the beginning of the second semester, sociol- ogy was added to the social studies curriculum. At the end of the year, a more informed young America steps into a new light. Mr. McGeath points out a historical site in Indiana to one of his classes. tm STUDENTS FIND OPPORTUNITIES IN BIG BUSINESS Students in beginning bookkeeping are busy concentrating on a new and difficult business transaction. Learning to type, take dictation, enter business transactions in ledgers, and recognize valid contracts, the students enrolled in the business education courses at Jackson Central were surely kept busy. Taking a timed writing is a big job, but many of the typing students found themselves typing sixty words per minute or even more. The typing classes performed an important duty for the school by mimeographing the programs for special convocations and also typing and duplicating the school paper, the Eagle's Cry. The business students worked hard this year to be able to step into the world of big business with the required basic knowledge. Erase, erase, erase. Mike Tharp has made a mistake and is diligently trying to correct it. 23 THERE'S A SONG IN THE AIR... We're loyal to you, Central High. . As the singing voices fade and the instruments are stored in their cases, we look back on a year filled with music. What would a football game be like if the band weren't there to play after every touchdown? What would Christmas be without the chorus singing Christ- mas carols? The band and chorus played a big part in making the school year an enjoyable one. They added their musical touch to almost every event. Every morning during first period, you could hear the chorus singing loud and clear. Fifth period, the band came through with hearty songs. The year was brimming with music--Thanksgiv- ing, Christmas, Easter, and the Spring Music Festival. Mr. Lash explains a difficult passage in Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring as the band members listen at- tentively. Cheering in the Christmas season, the chorus runs through a few bars of Silver Bells accompanied by Mrs. Stone in preparation' for the annual Christmas program. i241 A HEALTHY BODY BUILDS A BRIGHT FUTURE There is nothing like a little practice before the Barb Kerfoot demonstrates the proper form to be game gets under way in the freshman physical used on the trampoline as her classmates look on. education class. Physical fitness is the prime objective for the youth of today. Not only must one have a healthy body. Both high school health and physical educa- tion help one to achieve this goal. With daily exercise and nourishing food, students grow straight and tall into their places in the world. Girls' and boys' physical education classes are conducted in a similar manner with many of the same sports and exercises taught in both. Students familiarize themselves with the procedures of shuffle board, ping pong, gymnastics, basketball, parallel bars, archery, baseball, softball--all for enjoyment more than for future use. Mr. Bauchert explains bone structure of the human body to sophomore Doug Hyatt. E251 Modern design has found its way into Jackson Central as it has all over the world, as exhibited in this work by Alice Rigsby. The architects of the future slave over intricate plans VOCATIONAL COURSES OFFER STUDENTS PRACTICAL Art this year has been an exciting journey into the land of the modern. The students learned the modern aspect of everything from the common seed to modernistic sculpture. They learned to see the world through different eyes. The drafting class may produce some of the homes of the future. With all of the blueprints that they have drawn, there must be one in there someplace. The boys have worked hard and accom- plished very good results. Shop is another important field of study. The boys cover many things in this area ranging from building beautiful pieces of furniture to taking apart a gasoline engine to see how the thing works. Art, drafting, and shop send the young people in our school on the road to a good future and a solid career. Mr, Rardon demonstrates the use of the lathe to the shop class. i261 Mr. Barbour points out the different sections of beef as he lectures to a class of America's farmers of tO1T101'IOW. Along with this, the boys study other phases of agriculture such as modern agricultural improvements. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Preparing students for their future lives in the home and on the farm are the vocational home ec- onomics and agriculture courses, taught by Mrs. Day and Mr. Barbour. The girls in the home economics classes learn about cookin'g, sewing, home management, child care, and interior decorating. Several times each week during the first semester tantalizing smells could be caught drifting into the halls. Second se- mester, the girls learned to make clothes which would look sharp and also fit. To be come a good farmer takes many long years of hard work. The boys enrolled in the agriculture course know this and want a head start. By learning about the new and better techniques, these boys can enter the farming world ready for the ever-prevalent challenge to do better than the preceding generation. l27l Mrs. Day inspects the cookies prepared in a home economics class by Gloria Harvey. ii' .. These words spoken by the great British statesman Sir Winston Churchill, symbolized the spirit of the Jackson Central athletes. Victory was never out of sight as the mighty Eagles paced their way down the tangled path, chop- ping away defeats and erecting victories. Troubles were shunned and cast by the wayside with the de- feated competitors. Nations are defended and wars won through blood, toil, sweat, and tears--school spirit is com- posed of these things. Ready-set, go, HIKE! The season started with a home game with Chatard, and Chatard walked off the field winners for the first time, 13-6. The Eagles' first victory came at Clinton Prairie, 27-21, in a see-saw, passing battle. The game was won in the last quarter with a '74-yard pass from quarterback Dan Clements to ace end and halfback, Gary Browning. Victory number two came at the ex- pense of Western on the loser's rain- soaked field. A safety was the only score of the first half, but Central came back with three TD's to win, 20-6. Three in a row came at home, with Clinton Central serving as the vic- tims, l4-l3. Don Tudor's blocked ex- tra point proved to be the winning tactic. Central's attempt for four in a row fell short at undefeated Carmels Homecoming, 21-6. Upon falling victims to a Homecoming team, the Eagles tried to atone them- selves at their own Homecoming, but Westfield took care of them 26-13, in an injury-prone game for both teams. Royerton came to LC. and got beat 21-'7 in Central's Lad and Dad gameg underclassmen started on offense, but seniors shone on defense. Dave Leach broke his wrist and was out the re- mainder of the season. Eastern's domineering football machine whipped the Eagles 47-O on the winner's field. Central's season was closed with a 28-'7 victory at Sheridan, to make the Eagles' season mark 5-4-0. At the football banquet later in the year, Don Tudor received the Most Valu- able Player Award and the Tackling Trophyg Dan Clements was named Honorary Captaing Tom Moore was awarded the Most Improved Senior Awardg and Gary Brown- ing took away the Ball Hawk Trophy. Attending grade school in the Cicero or Atlanta Elementary Schools, township students not only learn- ed the three R's but also the latest in science, new math, and social studies. Entering junior high school, they became friends with those from opposite ends of the township and continued the learning process they had begun so well. Prepared for high school, they stepped into a whirlwind of new and inviting activities Having progressed through four years of preparing for the future, they are ready to step into a life in the community, attend college, or begin a career in a large city. Their own hard study made graduation possible only with the interest of the teachers, principal, school board, superintendent, the parents and tax- payers that pushed them through. i591 LEADING A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL CORPORATION PAULEETA MOHLER, Secretary Superintendent's Office Dallas Hohnstreiter, Superintendent of the Hamilton Heights Schools, heads the complicated system of schools in White River and Jackson Townships. Mr. Keesling explains the problem to his beginning algebra class. Not all the time in the classroom is spent in hard study as these freshmen discover in Mr. McGeath's world history class. There has to be some time for joking and fun. 65 Mrs. Recobs, senior English teacher, instructs the class in the use of the Controlled Reader, designed to improve the students' reading speeds and com- prehension. Looking back over the years there are many memories for every senior. As freshmen they shook while senior raid threaten- ed around the corner and then it came leaving relief behind. Also that year the freshmen struggled through world history and freshman literature. The highlight of the year was receiving their class sweaters. With the sophomore year came Silas Marner, biology, frogs, and ordering class rings. The class rings arrived and started the junior year with a fun-filled whirlwind of hard work toward the senior trip. There were magazine sales, fish fries, concessions at the football and basketball games, and last but not least Rest Assured. The whirlwind became stronger and the seniors were whisked into their final year. There were more fish fries, more hard work, and a senior play, Board- ing House Reach. The long awaited senior trip arrived, followed by the prom and then. . . the end of twelve wonderful years of school as each senior re- ceived his diploma and stepped out into the world that lay ahead. The seniors bid farewell to the wonderful world of Jackson Central. May they never forget the many happy hours and wonderful experiences of their high school years. The Higher You Rise, The Broader the View! CLASS FLOWER: White Rose CLASS COLORS: Metallic Blue and White ELECTED 36th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STA TES One of the privileges belonging to the Senior Class is the wearing of Senior Cords, and Jackson Central seniors truly outdid themselves this year in painting their cords. Becky Costomiris, an outstanding senior, brought a great honor to both herself and her school when she won the Hamilton County D.A.R. Good Citizens Award in February. GRAD UA TI ON NOT PICTURED: Daniel Biddle Sue Carol Reynolds Marilyn Long Trout E811 UNIOR PRESIDENT: Mick Sumner H SECRETARY: Anita Clements VICE PRESIDENT: Tom Kinnard TREASURER: Dennis Zetterberg Work is the most understood word in the English language to the Junior Class of Jackson Central. Working hard toward their senior trip, these students sponsored concessions and soc hops, sold magazines, and presented a class play. Academic work proved to be a challenge also as they moved through U. S. History and English III. They learned that the United States has come a long way since its Constitution was ratified 176 years ago. They also associated Our Town with their own small towns of Atlanta, ArcEaf-and Cicero. While they didn't see very much of the ball games and didn't get to dance as much as they would have liked at the soc hops, they know that when they see the lights of New York, it will be worth all the work. Dee Vestal finds that the preparation of any English theme requires serious concentration. i821 J U IORS RAPIDLY APPROACH SENIOR YEAR... S , .-3 ,-QV ,gg-fl Qlhuail. , Ji: - 2 5 F RESHME PRESIDENT: Dick Egler VICE PRESIDENT: Gary Lykes SECRETARY: Brenda Mills TREASURER: Amy Rainwater Senior Raid! Freshmen, run for your lives! The seniors are on the prowl! Senior Kathy Carson puts freshman Jane Sumner through one of her freshman duties. The freshmen stepped into high school, putting grade school and junior high life behind them. New opportunities in education and entertainment awaited them in their first year ---- football homecoming, homework, basketball homecoming, homework, soc hops, the Christmas dance, algebra, fish fries, world history, G.A.A., wrestling, cross country, class meetings, class officers, senior raid, homework, Great Expectations, parties, and more homework. The freshmen experienced defeats and victories through hard work and the absence of it. But this was only the beginning. The next three trying years will test the ability and perseverance of these students. And so it was onions to homework, teachers, and more homeworkg but that first year in high school was just great!
