JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY We Juniors of 1948-49, started our twelve mile race through school on the morning of September 6, 1938. ' The starting class consisted of nine girls and eight boys, each hoping someday to become famous, with ambitions ranging from fireman to president of the United States. Mrs. Darrow guided us throught the first two miles of the race During the third year of the race, Doris Blinn entered from ' Van Buren and Wayne Markley moved away. Betty Lieurance moved during the fourth year. Miss Pinney was our teacher both years. Mrs. King was our teacher during the fifth mile. Reatha Full- er and Patsy Miller moved away during the sixth year and Mrs. Baker was our teacher. Billie Collins entered during the eighth year and moved to Van Buren in 1947. During the freshman year Jack Cloud, Richard Schelling, and Dixie Kline entered the race. Our class officers were: Janice Barker, President: Ruth Friar, Vice-Presidentg and Winifred Griffith, Secretary and Treasurer. John McMillan from Van Buren, entered during the sophomore year. Ruthalice Hood, also from Van Buren, spent only the sopho- more year with us. Our class officers were: Janice Barker, Presi dentg Norman Schweikhardt, Vice-President, and Ruthalice Hood, Secretary and Treasurer. We helped present the high school operetta Jerry of Jerico Road. We selected black and white as our class colors and the American Beauty Rose as our class flower. We are now running the eleventh mile. Donald Lyons entered from Sweetzer. Our class officers are: Norman Schweikhardt, President: Richard Schelling, Vice-President, and Janice Barker, Secretary and Treasurer. Mr. Hodson has been our sponsor since we were in the eighth grade. This year we helped present the play Fixin Aunt Fannie. We also selected Success comes in cans, failures in can'ts, as our class motto. Our class now consists of sixteen members, which are pictures. Nine of us started in the first grade together. This brings our history up-to-date with only one mile between us and our goal. We take this opportunity to thank the school faculty for their patience and perseverance with us and to wish the seniors of 49Z' success and happiness. r , ' Q :P YS I o 6' 2353? ' f- 0 Q Q! 19.4 . SENIOR POEM Next on the roll we will call Frank Barker, a friend to all. To all of us he's brought some cheer, We will never forget him in coming years. Next comes Donna Booher so pretty and sweet She's always dressed so trim and neat, We've known her long as a wonderful friend And we pray that friendship will never end. The romeo of the Senior Class, Is John Hoover dashing and fast Although he's new these last three years He's made friends galore and we think he's a dear. Bill Myers is next on the role, With a smile and laugh that's good for your soul With jokes and wit that makes us all laugh, Our memories of him will always last. A new member of our class this year Is Joan Barnes, who brought along some cheer, We've learned to know her as a friend And we'd be sorry to see that friendship end. Next we see come into view, Esther Maddox, a friend who's true She has a smile for everyone, Her happy disposition is surpassed by none. Normagene Murray, next on our list Small and blonde, she'd really be missed With a happy smile for everyone She's a very good friend and lots of fun. Now this poem comes to an end A poem of happiness and many friends But now we leave them all behind, Knowing our school days are the happiest we'11 find. l 3 Meet the class of '49 To Jackson High they've not been a jinx, But now they're leaving the dear old school, To find in life their realm to rule. First upon our scholar's role. Comes Jackie Stroup, whose wit is full. She's the master mind of our dear class, For a better friend, you could not ask. Donna Buckland, jolly and bold, Comes next upon our Senior role, At everything she's learned to smile, And make this life seem more worth while. Then comes Colleen Slusher into view, With a smile for me and a smile for you, Each day's a little brighter still, Because of a word from her of good will. Small but forceful Doris Lawrence Comes next upon our scholar's role, Our class just wouldn't be complete, Without Doris, so friendly and sweet. Next is our president, Burlin Beavans In working for our class he rates above all, He's handsome, intelligent and very wise For any girl he'd make a Prize. Blonde and goodlooking is this one, His name is Lawson Lee. I-le's a wonderful member of our class, His friendliness makes trouble days go fast.
