I've been having a hard time keeping up with those 1949 seniors. It seems they are scattered to the far corners of the earth. But still close to Jackson is the young man named Frank Latendress Lyle Millard Barker. I-Ie's still hanging on to his name. Besides he has made quite a name for himself in the farming world. Right now he's sitting on his front porch with his dog at his feet, pushing buttons to run those three tractors he now owns. His little wife, Frances Colleen Slusher, kept her promise to so- ciety and is the typical farmer's wife she always hoped to be. She also made some of Mrs. Darrow's dreams come true. From September until the last of May, she occupies the position as primary teacher at Jackson Center School. John Hoover liked Washington D. C. so much that he decided to return there to live. He is the President's confidential commedian. It certainly is a wonder- ful job for John. Right here, I think, that we should pay our due respects to the president. He was such a good class president for three years that the forty- niners decided to make him master of the land. Nice going President Beavans. Not so far away we see a young lady in white keeping an eye peeled for a good looking intern. People now call this young lady, Nurse Maddox. She is still keeping house with Donna Buckland. They won't tell us who the lucky one is going to be. Jacqueline Stroup's dreams of going to Switzerland came true only it isn't a permanent residence. She travels on an ocean liner as a dietition. She told me the other day that she ran into Bill Myers on one of her stops in England. Bill is in competition with the King's jester. Donna Booher crashed Hollywood with her beautiful legs. Betty Grable takes a back seat now days. Joan Barnes is also among the top performers. She is doing a wonderful job as a ballet dancer. Normagene Murray, who became a student at Ball State Teachers College was graduated cum laude in 1953. She is now principal of Central High School in South Bend. Do not be surprised if one day she is president of the N.E.A. Bud Lee is still riding around on his brother's motorcycle. I guess it starts a little easier than it did back in '49. Doris Lawrence is still typing away at her secretarial position at Fort Wayne with a large business concern. O Q9 s 1 ' 'S x ,Q- XX ' , ' Q 9 ' ' t r - U . N 'J' L 5 3 hw - sr' :-. en v- 2,2 . f f . Next comes Donna Booher so pretty and sweet She's always dressed so trim and neat, We've known her long as a wonderful friend And we pray that friendship will never end. The romeo of the Senior Class, Is John Hoover dashing and fast Although he's new these last three years He's made friends galore and we think he's a dear. Bill Myers is next on the role, With a smile and laugh that's good for your soul With jokes and wit that makes us all laugh, Our memories of him will always last. A new member of our class this year Is Joan Barnes, who brought along some cheer, We've learned to know her as a friend And we'd be sorry to see that friendship end. Next we see come into view, Esther Maddox, a friend who's true She has a smile for everyone, Her happy disposition is surpassed by none. Normagene Murray, next on our list Small and blonde, she'd really be missed With a happy smile for everyone She's a very good friend and lots of fun. Now this poem comes to an end A poem of happiness and many friends But now we leave them all behind, Knowing our school days are the happiest we'11 find. l 3 Meet the class of '49 To Jackson High they've not been a jinx, But now they're leaving the dear old school, To find in life their realm to rule. First upon our scholar's role. Comes Jackie Stroup, whose wit is full. She's the master mind of our dear class, For a better friend, you could not ask. Donna Buckland, jolly and bold, Comes next upon our Senior role, At everything she's learned to smile, And make this life seem more worth while. Then comes Colleen Slusher into view, With a smile for me and a smile for you, Each day's a little brighter still, Because of a word from her of good will. Small but forceful Doris Lawrence Comes next upon our scholar's role, Our class just wouldn't be complete, Without Doris, so friendly and sweet. Next is our president, Burlin Beavans In working for our class he rates above all, He's handsome, intelligent and very wise For any girl he'd make a Prize. Blonde and goodlooking is this one, His name is Lawson Lee. I-le's a wonderful member of our class, His friendliness makes trouble days go fast. Enroute to Dayton, Ohio. The first place of interest visited was the Mounds City National Park near Chillicothe Ohio. The group crossed the James River at Point Pleasant and went rm to Charleston, West Virginia for the night. The second day's journey took them into the Blue Ridge mountains. Two outstanding mountain sights on this day were those of New River Canyon, the deepest canyon in eastern United States, and Hawks' Nest Rock State Park. Another interesting feature of the day was the visiting of the White Sulphur Springs Health Resort known as The Green Briar Hotel. Its grounds cover seven thousand acres. The group reached Richmond, Virginia at nightfall and spent two nights there. While in the city of Richmond they went on a guided sight-seeing tour and visited the Capitol Building, The White House of the Confederacy, and St. Johns' Church which is 207 years old. At Williamsburg, Virginia they visited the Capitol Building, the Jail, the Governor's Mansion and the George Washington's House. These buildings are not in use now but are kept just as they were in our colonial days for tourists. The next visit was at Jamestown. There they saw a large pier, the museum, some famous statues, and a very old church and cemetery. On Friday the group visited the Fredricksburg battlefield of 1862 and went to Mt. Vernon to visit George Washington's home and his tomb. They arrived in Washington D. C. at noon and spent Friday afternoon and Saturday forenoon visiting some of the noted historical places there. Among them were the Capi- tol Building, Arlington National Cemetery, George Washington's Monument, White House, Lincoln's Memorial, Washington Catherdral and the National Museum. On leaving Washington D. C. enroute home they came through Maryland and Pennsylvania crossing the Alleghany Mountains at their highest point which is 2,850 feet. The last night of the trip was spent in Washington, Pennsylvaia. On Sunday the group traveled on through Pennsylvania and through Ohio by way of Columbus and on home to Jackson arriving there at 5:15. Also making the trip were: Mr. Hannah, senior sponsor, Mr. Roscoe Barker Mrs. Claude Gilbert, and a Farm Bureau group from Wells County. ,, Q0 ' Fi 'I-ic . 1 Il- . l X xx 4 . bg . n 9 A f - X ef 25 2 515 5 n , CW ,,' 'A' img f' .413 Z7 IIIITIUITIES... Mr. Love, their coach, taught them many of the fundamentals of basketball. After they entered high school they received their training under Coach Hannah. In 1945-46, the seniors, who were then Freshmen, qualified and began playing on our second team. These Seniors were L. Lee, B. Beavans, F. Barker, and B. Myers. The next year B. Beavans and L. Lee began playing as regulars on the varsity team and continued throughout school. In this same year, Freshmen, N. Schweikhardt, B. Grove, B. Couch, and W. Penrod also played on the varsity team. 1947-48 found the varsity team consisting of all Sopho- mores and Juniors namely, B. Beavans. L. Couch, B. Grove, W. Penrod, and N. Schweikhardt. This year the same boys played on our varsity team in addition to D. Lyons, W. Slusher, and R. Stroup. Last year the boys won 9 out of 18 games. This year they broke their record by winning 14 out of 17 games, so far. We would like to mention the fact that this team has brok- en quite a few records for the school. In 1948, they won the first tournament game in the history of Jackson, they have won a larger percentage of games in one year than any other Jackson team, and they also received our first trophy this year by winning the 4-team tournament at West Rockcreek Our student managers are: John Hoover and Harold Lloyd. 0 Q' ogg? Bill M.: Yes, the boss was sick of me. Doris and John were driving along a public highway. John was driving with one hand and had the other around Doris Traffic Cop: Hey, Buddy, don't you think you had better use both hands? John: I would, sir but I have to have one to drive with. Two girl twins had reached the age of about 55 and neither of them had a chance to get married yet. They were saying their prayers one night by the bedside. This was one of their prayers: Dear Lord, I'm not asking anything for myself, but please send my my sister a brother-in-law. Amen. Mrs. Hodson: Gar, do you think you are backing the car straight? Mr. Hodson: Well the front is in the road so I guess the back is too. Donna Booher: Oh! My corn hurts. Do you have a corn? Mr. I-Iannah: No, I keep the dirt washed off my feet so a corn doesn't have a chance to grow. Jim Love: Really John, your hand- writing gets worse ajl the time. John Hoover: Well, Jim if I wrote any better you'd be finding fault with my spelling. Willis eating Italian spaghetti Willis: Boy this stuff is hot. Bob W.: It warms you all the way down. Willis: Yea, my feet are beginning to sweat. Norma: What did the lightning bug say when he backed into the meat grinder? Jackie: I don't know. Norma: I'm delighted. Bevington: What would you do if you were going down the road 60 miles per hour and had a. blowout? Harold L.: Get out and fix it. 33 Stan: Mamma, what is a second-story man? Mrs. Hannah: Your father is one. If I don't believe his first story he always has another ready. Winnifred G.: Don't drive so fast around corners, it makes me nervous. Bill C.: If you don't want to get scared, do as I do - shut your eyes when we come to the corners. Cop fTo excited lady driverlz Use your noodle, lady, use your noodle. Mrs. Darrow: My goodness where is it? I've pushed and pulled everything in the car. It takes face powder to get a man-baking powder to keep him. Mother: Why did Donald get such a bad mark in history? Miss Garrett: He didn't know when George Washington died. Mother: How should he? We live on a back country road and never see any funerals go by Joe: What's a panther? Shxnoez A panther is a perthon who makes panth. Mother: I hope you were quiet at school today, Tommy. Tommy T.: Yes, mother-I fell asleep right after I got there, and the teacher said she would tan the hide of anybody that woke me up. Norma S.: Darling, I love you very much. C Bl-IN MORRISON DEAN RICH W ILLIAM GRIFFITH 3 HISTORY OF BUILDING One hundred and eight years ago a system was established in Jackson Township. A modest one room school was erected near the Salamonie river at Sugar Grove. A suitable marker, erected in 1932, perpetuates the memory of this first school in the minds of the citizens of Jackson Township. From that mod- est beginning the educational system has grown through the years to the present modern consolidated school. In 1936 the Federal Government offered to assist the town- ship to obtain a new school building. This offer was in line with the govermental policy of creating new wealth and at the same time assisting those people who were victims of the depression. The new building was erected at a cost of S1Z5,600. The gov- ernment through its agency, The Works Progress Adminstra- tion, furnished 598,000 for its share of the cost. Therefore, the cost to Jackson Township was only S27,600. The township sold bonds amounting to S20,500. The remainder of the 527,600 was obtained by razing the one room school buildings and using the material in the. new building. The State Board of Education issued a continuous commission to the new school immediately. Ordinarily a new school is in operation for some time before a continuous commission can be obtained. The first year of school in the new building began in 1937. ft, N A. BERT Custard Trustee WAYNE LEE County Superintendent 4
