He has many great responsibilities that require patience, co-operation, and tact. His striking personality and friendly manner have inspired the students to accomplish high goals. He is admired by all who come into contact with him. His authority on varied subiects and the impartial manner in which he deals with different matters are known and respected by all. Mr. Smith is friendly to everyone, and he is always willing to help and give advice whenever he can. These traits have made him a favorite of many. Jacksboro High School is very fortunate indeed to have Mr. Smith for its principal, and the community is also fortunate to have him for a citizen and friend. Mrs. Wesley Hendricks was sur- prised by members of the faculty with a farewell party in the high school library iust before the Thanksgiving holidays. Mrs. Hendricks completed ten years of teaching in the Jacksboro High School last spring. i A Thanksgiving feast was prepared by the girls in Homemaking lll with mothers and women teachers as their guests. A delicious baked turkey din- ner with all the trimmings gave the girls a unanimous vote as excellent and well-trained cooks and hostesses by those present. Forming part of the centerpiece are the many lovely gifts received by the honoree. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Whitaker, parents of Mrs. Hendricks, were pres- ent for the occasion. Editor Evelyn Hobson ties the last knot on the package containing the first shipment of the annual material to the publisher. And here, Mr. Gregg, post office employee, accepts the package for mailing from Mary Whitsitt with the editor looking on. The editor and June Dunlap are de- lighted that the shipment is ready ahead of schedule. The staff was able to beat the deadline by several days. Mr. Kemp, our beloved custodian, is loved by every boy and girl who ever attended J.H.S. He is always kind, friendly, helpful, and considerate. He is always around when needed. He does everything from keeping the building spic and span to listening to the troubles and woes of the stu- dents. The students and faculty will never be able to express to Mr. Kemp their appreciation fully for all the things he has done for them. l believe in my own ability to work efficiently and to think clearly, and I pledge myself to make America a better place for everyone. This is the last paragraph of the F.B.L.A. Creed which is being given in unison by the new mem- bers of the club at the in- itiation service. The band's assistance at pep rallies was greatly ap- preciated. The booming of the drums accenting the yells of the students added to the spirit of the occasion. The melodic beauty of the high school song being layed by the band and sung by the entire student body is a never-to-be-for gotten thrill. Tables loaded with mums for the Homecoming Game meant hours of work for members of the junior class. Here Dub Cook and Troy Brock are ready to carry the mums to be de- livered during the next two or three hours. Looking over the beauti- M. They are studying colonization in the Americas and the influence European institu- tions have had on modern American culture. 'They are also making com- parisons of Colonial conflicts with European countries with those of our present day foreign problems. ful mum corsages are Linda Hawkins, iunior class vice president, with Evelyn Mil- ler, Richard Gardner, Paula Armstrong, Paula Curtner, and Janie Stewart, the five members who sold the most mums. Paula Curtner was declared tops in salesmanship ability. Miss Light, class sponsor, is help- ing to direct the sorting of mums. Evelyn Hobson, editor, Sandy Mc- Donald, business manager, and Mary Whitsitt, copy editor, make pre-school plans for work on the '57 Fang at the home of the advisor, Mrs. Ogle. Most of the ads were sold in August and much of the planning was done before the beginning of school. Mrs. Puryear gets a cup of coffee from the coffee urn in the teachers lounge while Mrs. Calloway and Mrs. Hill chat in the background. Mr. Highfill is enioylng listening to the music from the hi-fidelity record player. This machine is valuable in helping the band toward perfection in playing. Included also is a tape re- corder that is used a great deal in band practice. TEACHERS? ROUN -UP Mrs. Hilton Crane, sec- retary to our superintend- ent, fulfills her duties as a hostess for the Teacher Round-up by greeting guests Mrs. Lee O. Gowdy, Mrs. Lora Lee Turner and Mrs. Leigh McGee. ,M Here is a glimpse of a few of the many who at- tended the affair. Punch, coffee, and cookies were served. The refreshment table was decorated in purple and white with Welcome Teachers in styrofoam forming part of the centerpiece. 1 Hilton Crane, secretary- manager of the Chamber of Commerce, Jean Lindsey, president of the Business and Professional Women's Club, and Dr. John C. Wil- son, president of Chamber of Commerce, are to be commended for the splen- did get-together. PEP RAlLlLY SCENES O, the day of the pep assembly! The auditorium walls brace themselves and in troop freshmen, sopho- mores, iuniors, and seniors, all obsessed with out-yell- ing each other. Cheerleaders Burlene Wells, Barbara Hatfield, Mildred Dixson, Bennie Johnson, and Pat Perkins lead the yells each Friday morning during football season. Beat Ranger! was the battle cry in J. H. S. the week before the game with Ranger. The splendid spirit and enthusiasm exemplified paid off in a victory of 19-7 over Ranger. Each vibrant with school spirit, the sparkling five yell leaders led J.H.S. in Pep- They worked up new yells and assembly skits. This skit by the cheer- leaders represented the hopes and aspirations of the students and the team to win the game on Fri- day night. ' 'I We my Y -, s,...A Gold driftwood and red candles galore were fea- tured in the decorations of Delta Kappa Gamma Re- gional meeting in Jacks- boro October l3. FTA girls, dressed in black skirts, white blouses, and red ties carrying out the FTA col- ors, served the meal. Those serving were Melina Caruthers , Ann Sickles, Zelta Long, Janie Stewart, Lillie Mae Stark, Paula Arm- strong, LaVerne Marley, Pat Conway, Johnnie Creek, Mildred Dixson, Barbara Anderson, and Ann Leath- erwood. Margie Mattox, Carroll Morrow, and Linda Gunter, KABC members, help keep the books in the library ready for use. Members of the club serve the student body not only by keep- ing the books and magazines pro- perly shelved but also by helping locate materials housed in the library. All members are required to learn the classification of books to enable them to serve their fellow classmates. Dora Tilghman, Gayle Donley, and John Waldrop with other students shown in the background, realize that much practice is nec- essary to build accuracy and speed in typing. The business education department has as its ob- iective the teaching of the fundamental principles of business to those students who plan to enter the bus- iness field. Courses are also offered to aid students in other areas of work. That's Mike Myers' feet and hands you see and Stephen Vaughrfs back. You remember the Ready Rebels and the Atomic Teens, the two political parties in the election for county of- ficials. Miss Light and Mrs. Crawford serve refresh- ments to Mr. White, Class- room Teachers Association president, at the initial CTA meeting in September. Jimmy Dixson, State F.B.L.A. vice president, in- stalled the local club of- ficers in an impressive candlelight ceremony. Other officers are Wanda Kay, Sandra Cox, Barbara Hatfield, and Willie Ruth Scarber. Mrs. Wallace McGaughey, secretary to our principal, is busily preparing the scored achievement tests taken by all high school students for tabula- tion. ln the library, students .oil over their assignments using the many thick refer- ence and pleasure books and the splendid array of magazines for English themes, book reports, and just plain reading enioy- ment. Here Jimmy Dixson, with the assistance of Mrs. Calla- way, librarian, selects a magazine providing infor- mation on a chosen subject. Mr. Jap Smith is busy as usual mak- ing his famous Chili. The seniors could not do without this fine citizen who gives of his time and talent to help the class have their annual fund rais- ing Chili Supper. Jacksboro citizens think the chili is delicious and the seniors think Mr. Smith is wonderful. ln the background is Mr. J. A. Mor- rison, who was Mr. Smith's able as- sistant. Stephen Vaughn and Patsy Perkins, two of our most talented musicians, were special attractions at the B. and P. W. Bosses' Night dinner. Stephen's splendid voice has been praised by music critics and laymen alike and no gather- ing of any size would be complete without at least one song from him. Patsy has been our most accom- plished pianist for several years. Always willing to lend her superb talent, she has been in constant de- mand by both civic and high school organizations. Two more accomplished and willing performers have never before been in J.H.S. Mr. Don Smith, a loyal and con- siderate friend to every student and teacher, is well-liked for his thought- fulness and personal interest shown to each and every one of us. He is always ready to share the ioys and problems of each individual student. Periods before school and at noon provide splendid times for get-to- gethers. The front entrance of the high school building is the scene of this chat session. The ringing of the bell will signal the beginning of a new school day. The Christmas Assembly presented by the Choral Club was one of the most beautiful assemblies ever to be presented in our high school. Seventeen lovely boxes were made from the fruit, nuts, candy, toys, and canned goods brought by the members. Men. First Team Second Team All-District All-District ln the opening game of the season, the Tigers trampled the Lake Worth Bull- frogs by a score of 40-6. Touchdowns were credited to Mustin, Kundysek, Patrick, Sparks, and Mathis. The Tigers notched their second victory of the season by beating the Ranger Bulldogs l9-7. This way a very good game and one of the Tigers' best efforts of the season. Touchdowns were made by Mustin, Bowen, and Sparks. The mighty Graham Steers were given a battle from start to finish but finally won over the Tigers by a 20-7 score. The score was made by Sparks after Mustin and Gunter had moved the ball into scoring position. Hard tackling and block- ing which resulted in fumbles was the highlight of the game. The Tigers bowed tothe 3A Mineral Wells Mountaineers by a score of 26-6. The single score was made by Mustin after the play was set up by a 30-yard pass play from Hurd to Kundysek. The Decatur Eagles were defeated by 39-O in the first district game. The Tigers were really clicking as every man on the squad saw action in the game. Men, First Team All-District All4District The Tigers squared off with the Burkburnett Bulldogs in an important game and came out the losers by a 20-7 score. It was a very close game with the Tigers tying the score at 7-7 in the fourth quarter on a one-yard plunge by Mustin. The Bulldogs won in the last few minutes on a pass play. In a game played at Electra the Electra Tigers beat our Tigers 20-7. The lone score for Jacksboro came in the first quarter on a drive by Mustin. Electra scored all their points in the last half. ' The favored Olney Cubs were swamped by the Tigers 33-IS. The whole team worked together to get back on the winning trail. Three touchdowns were made by Mustin and two ly Patrick. Again in the scoring streak, the Tigers defeated the Nocona Indians by a 28-I2 score. Mustin and Patrick each scored twice and Sampley kicked all the extra points. The Jacksboro High School Tigers closed the i956 season with an overwhelm- ing 45-7 triumph over Bowie. Fullback Tommy Mustin made all seven touch- downs on running plays through large holes opened in the Bowie line. The whole Tiger line, including ends Kay and Bowen, tackles Gibson and Clark, guards Simpson and Davis, and center Sikes and backs Sampley and Kundysek, did exceptional blocking and defensive work.
