CCIVIIVIA DI CI GFFICER CIVIDR. JCJHN W. YGU G, JR. Commander John W. Young was bom in Scranton, Pennsylvania on 11 April 1947. He attended the Univer- sity of South Carolina, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Banking and Finance, After commissioning, he was assigned to Sub Unit ONE First Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company flst AN- GLICOD, Fleet Marine Force, Vietnam as Officer-in-Charge of Naval Gunfire Team 4-4, Vi Thanh, subsequent tours included CINCPACFLT Public Affairs Detachment, Westem Pacific, Subic Bay, R.P., as Assistant Pub- lic Affairs Officer, USS SHASTA QAE-553 as Assistant First Lieutenant, and Commanding Officer Naval Re- serve Center NRC Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Dunng his tour as Commanding Officer NRC Tuscaloosa, Com- mander Young eamed a Master of Arts Degree in Comparative Govemment from the University of Ala- bama. Upon graduation from Surface Warfare Officer Department Head School in May 1980, Commander Young was assigned as Operations Officer aboard USS MULLINNIX CDD-9445 followed by a tour as Operations! Plans Officer for Commander Naval Surface Group Four, Newport, Rhode Island. His last sea duty was as Executive Officer aboard USS JOHN L. HALL QFFG-521. Thereafter, he was assigned to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations fOP-09Ri as Head for Surface Training. Commander YOUNG was ordered to duty as Commanding Officer of USS JACK WILLIAMS CFFG-245 in May 1988. V Commander YOUNG is married to the former Ellen Schmaltz of West Pittson, Pennsylvania. They have three children, Eric Pierce, Lyle Christopher, and Lauren Kendal.
