Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1965 volume:

J. T. Barber School is gaining prestige in North Carolina for its outstanding performance in sports, scholarship and music. It has achieved honors on the local, regional and state levels. In the sports field, it has produced such out¬ standing professional par¬ ticipants as Walter Bellamy ' 57 , elected 44 Rookie of the Year 99 in the N.B.A.; Aaron Martin, outstanding player for the Los Angeles Rams, John Pearsall, professional boxer. We are proud of the Academic records of many of our graduates. Russell Gould is an assistant teacher of Chemistry at the Uni¬ versity of Long Island in Brooklyn, and William Gavins is a computor at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory, Dahlgren, Vir¬ ginia. In the fine arts, Cleopatra Har gett, former soloist at Livingstone College, is cur¬ rently teaching in the Ra- liegh City system, and Vivians Adams Huggins, is band instructor in South Fulton High School, At¬ lanta, Georgia. The students at Barber are justly proud of their achievements and honors awarded them and their school. From earliest times ring adornment of the human race had been universal. There have been rings to indicate wealth, wisdom, love, rank and medical power just to name a few. Rings may be plain, en¬ graved and decorated, or set with stones. J. T. Bar¬ ber s rings, an original de¬ sign, is of burnt gold cen¬ tered with a large synthetic ruby stone flanked on the right by Minerva, the god¬ dess of Wisdom, Science and the arts, and on the left by a mighty Warrior, representing Valor, which signifies courage, audacity, and dauntlessness. We, the students of J. T. Barber High School, deem it an honor to be recipients of this ring and consider the ideas for which it stands keys for a successful life. The 1965 Warrior J. T. Barber High School New Bern, North Carolina Co-Editors Walter Adams Ronnie Nixon We the members of the class of 1965, have selected a very cher¬ ished symbol for our theme - the ring. We are especially impressed with its noble appearance and what it signifies. We realize that the recipients of this ring should ever be mindful of the fact that this ring is not to be measured. Accord¬ ing to its intrinsic valve, but the true warmth should be its real sig¬ nificance measured by achievement through laborius works. Remember that awards are received and worn for meritorius accomplishments. The ones who are honored to re¬ ceive this ring should be fully aware of the many factors that contributed to the first milestone in their edu¬ cation. Among the most influen¬ tial in preparing us for this esteemed attainment are our devoted parents, dedicated teachers, and interested counselors. As you turn the pages of this annual be cognizant of the fact that we have attempted to de¬ pict through pictures and narration the life at Barber High as well as the accomplishments and aspirations of the members of the Class of 1965. The Students of Barber Participate To the Warriors of 1964 . . . To the Warriors of 1964 who spent many afternoons and evenings working together, striving for fitness, practicing sportsmanship, fighting for victory, and learning new formations unknown to their rivals, do we pay tribute. The sacrifices that you made, the long Hours of hard work, and the many sleepless nights you experienced, have not gone unnoticed. We are proud of you, and feel as though you have done much to gain recognition for J. T. Barber High School. Although you did not succeed in becoming the state champion, the goal to which you paired, you stood your ground and realized that even in defeat you were strengthened. This success was made possible through the diligent leadership and faith instilled in you by your coach, Mr. Simon E. Coates. The yearbook staff proudly recognizes your prowess, your perseverance, and your loyalty to J. T. Barber. Theory, Experiments, and Demonstrations Characterize This Department Ever since Aristotle applied the scientific method to the phenomena of his environment men have had an insatiable desire to cast light on the mysteries of nature. Today the science department of Barber fur¬ thers this pursuit by giving incentive and a firm back¬ ground in modern scientific concepts to some of the researches of tomorrow. Both in classroom discussions and laboratory experimentation, the enlightening guidance of the science teachers paves the way toward an inconceivably wonderful future. MR. AL J. Recog¬ nizing this need, our Social Studies Department is constantly taking strides in the direction of the under¬ standing so necessary for today’s universal problems. Barber School is gaining prestige in North Carolina for its outstanding performance in sports, scholarship and music. It has achieved honors on the local, regional and state levels. In the sports field, it has produced such out¬ standing professional par¬ ticipants as Walter Bellamy 57, elected “Rookie of the Year in the N.B.A.; Aaron Martin, outstanding player for the Los Angeles Rams, John Pearsall, professional boxer. We are proud of the Academic records of many of our graduates. Russell Gould is an assistant teacher of Chemistry at the Uni¬ versity of Long Island in Brooklyn, and William Gavins is a com put or at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory, Dahlgren, Vir¬ ginia. In the fine arts, Cleopatra Hargett, former soloist at Livingstone College, is cur¬ rently teaching in the Ra- liegh City system, and Vivians Adams Huggins, is band instructor in South Fulton High School. At¬ lanta, Georgia. J. T. Bar¬ ber 9 s rings, an original de¬ sign, is of burnt gold cen¬ tered with a large synthetic ruby stone flanked on the right by Minerva, the god¬ dess of Wisdom, Science and the arts, and on the left by a mighty Warrior, representing Valor, which signifies courage, audacity, and dauntlessness. We, the students of J. T. Barber High School, deem it an honor to be recipients of this ring and consider the ideas for which it stands keys for a successful life.
