MR. W. M. BOOKER J J nncipafs JKessacje Drifting or paddling? What are you doing as you move into the future? That is a paramount question to be faced by each student regardless of classification, but more especially by those of you who are seniors. As days follow days, it is inevitable that you will move into an un¬ known future ' . The fact that it is unknown need not mean it is fore¬ boding. If you are to be able to truly voice the sentiments of the poet who claimed he was the Master of His Fate and the Captain of His Soul, you must surely not drift into the future. It is widely recognized that you should not leave your future to chance or to the whims of Lady Luck. You should be giving serious thought to where you are going and how you are going to get there. Today ' s soci¬ ety has a place for him who is moving purposefully. The fellow who is paddling has many choices. He can move upstream, across stream, or in any direction he desires. Whereas, one who is drifting has only one course, downstream, at the mercies of all the elements of the enviroment. I hope that the fact that you have remained in school to further your education can be accepted as irrefutable evidence that you have your paddles in hand and are rowing vigorously toward your chosen goal. On the basis of this, I feel that congratulations to you are in order. Permit me to be among the first to extend them to you. Mrs. R. M. Roundtree ' s busy hands keep the princi¬ pal ' s records in immaculate order. Mfr , rld Geography, Guid- i and English 15
