C ass jHjstoru On September, 1954, we, the freshmen of West Street High School were happier than ever, knowing that this was the beginning of our high school career. The various teachers of dear West Street High glimpsed over 200 freshmen chatting merrily in the halls. In less than a week, however, the teachers and freshmen became acquainted. Our hearts will always remain thankful to our advisors who helped us to overcome the problems that confronted us. Our advisors were: Mr. F. Baker, Mrs. G. R. Brown, Mrs. N. Evans, Mr. G. C. Fields, and Mr. G. A. Harrison. Nine boys and girls became interested in the band. They were Catherine Murrell, Vivian Adams, Patricia Mumford, Marvin Morgan, while Joyce E. Best, Edna Mills, Barbara Thurston, and Gertrude Kirkman became Glee Club members. We were proud to have Elearnor Jarmond as a majorette, while Louise Dudley, Theresa Stewart, and Joan Murrell were on the Pep Squad. The Student Council Representatives were Carrie Armond and Ellen Jones. Joining the Drama Guild were Betty Farrow, Catherine Murrell, Marion Harvey, while Patricia Mumford, Vivian Adams, Eleanor Rodgers, Marion Harvey, Betty Farrow, Catherine Murrell, Louise Dudley were interested in the N. H. A. The Bus Drivers’ Club and Safety Patrol included Ella Bell and John Pearsall. The Library Club consisted of many freshmen. They were Louise Dudley, Alfreda Brown, Marion Harvey, Betty Farrow, while the Planet Staff members were Vivian Adams, Carrie Armond, Marion Harvey and Carathene Wallace. Two of our boys became football stars. They were Vernon Robinson and A1 Daniels. Playing on the boys’ basketball team were Fred Lilly, Elijah Stewart, Charles Pearson, Robert Brown, and Eart Wiggins while Catherine Murrell, Carolyn Dillahunt, Alfreda Brown, Vivian Adams, Mamie Cry played on the Girls’ basketball team. In September of 1955, only 150 students registered as sophomores. Entering into the new institution which was J. T. Barber School made this year a more inspiring one. There were many new clubs that were not affored at West Street High. Catherine Murrell, Marion Harvey, Alfreda Brown, Carathene Wallace, Vivian Adams, Betty Farrow, Carrie Armond, Louise Dudley, Ruth Mitchell, Martha Alexander, Lucy Moseley, and Gertrude Kirkman became Tri-Hi-Y members and Charles Pearson, Leonard Dunston, Calvin Blake, Arthur Sasser, and John Pearsall became Hi-Y members. The N. H. A. members were Ellen Koonce, Helen Nesbit, Cleaster Fonville, Lucy Moseley, and Annie Nobles. The Math Club members were Joyce E. Best, Martha Bryant, Helen Nesbit, Della Collins, Alfreda Brown, Manior Fonville, Mary Murphy, and Ruth Murphy. Catherine Murrell, Martha Alexander, Vivian Adams, Gracie Maye, Eart Wiggins and Robert Brown helped to make a successful Glee Club while Catherine Murrell, Vivian Adams, Eleanor Midgett, Martha Alexander, Gracie Maye and Carrie Armond were members of the Girls ' Chorus. 24
