We have spent four years here at Barber High School, some of sorrow and some of happiness. Later, when you look through the pages of our 1958 Warrior, you will recollect the hours we spent in making this great dream come true. This will inspire us to work forward toward our future dreams. 2 MARIAN HARVEY - LOUISE DUDLEY Co-Editors-in-Chief Dedication On behalf of the class of 1958 of J. T. Barber High School, we wish to dedicate the 1958 Warrior to our faithful advisors, Mrs. J. w, Jones, Mrs. R. W. Milteer and Mr. G. A. Harrison, who have worked so diligently to make our dreams come true. They have contributed to the senior class, the achievement we have thus obtained. The Senior Class MR. GEORGE A. HARRISON VERNON AUGUSTUS ROBINSON Born February 23, 1940 Died June 28, 1957 President-elect of the Class of 1958 VERNON ROBINSON MRS. RUBY W. MILTEER JPrincipals JKessape Education is the torch that destroys the fear in the heart of us. In attempting to give a message to you as members of the 1958 graduating class I was struck by the thought expressed by the above motto which you have adopted. In this age of Sputniks and other high flying missiles, there has been a pronounced amount of fear in the hearts of many of us. I am sure that there isn’t any fear in your hearts. You have discovered the secret to overcome such frustrations. As you pass from these halls into a new environment, we are confident that you have your torch and are carrying it high. There is one caution which I should like to express, however. As with any other type of torch, unless it is properly maintained, the effectiveness of its light will be impaired. Likewise with your education, if it is not kept up-to- date, your potentialities will be lessened. The world is depending on you and your education. Please bear this in mind as you take your leave of us. Yours truly, 4 MISS DAISY McMANUS - Secretary 5 ooooooooooo @ooe ooooo©s MRS. DORIS C. GARDNER, B. S. Commercial Education MR. JAMES C. The various teachers of dear West Street High glimpsed over 200 freshmen chatting merrily in the halls. In less than a week, however, the teachers and freshmen became acquainted. Our hearts will always remain thankful to our advisors who helped us to overcome the problems that confronted us. Our advisors were: Mr. F. Baker, Mrs. G. R. Brown, Mrs. N. Evans, Mr. G. C. Fields, and Mr. G. A. Harrison. Nine boys and girls became interested in the band. They were Catherine Murrell, Vivian Adams, Patricia Mumford, Marvin Morgan, while Joyce E. Best, Edna Mills, Barbara Thurston, and Gertrude Kirkman became Glee Club members. We were proud to have Elearnor Jarmond as a majorette, while Louise Dudley, Theresa Stewart, and Joan Murrell were on the Pep Squad. The Student Council Representatives were Carrie Armond and Ellen Jones. Joining the Drama Guild were Betty Farrow, Catherine Murrell, Marion Harvey, while Patricia Mumford, Vivian Adams, Eleanor Rodgers, Marion Harvey, Betty Farrow, Catherine Murrell, Louise Dudley were interested in the N. Two of our boys became football stars. They were Vernon Robinson and A1 Daniels. Playing on the boys’ basketball team were Fred Lilly, Elijah Stewart, Charles Pearson, Robert Brown, and Eart Wiggins while Catherine Murrell, Carolyn Dillahunt, Alfreda Brown, Vivian Adams, Mamie Cry played on the Girls’ basketball team. In September of 1955, only 150 students registered as sophomores. Entering into the new institution which was J. T. Barber School made this year a more inspiring one. There were many new clubs that were not affored at West Street High. Catherine Murrell, Marion Harvey, Alfreda Brown, Carathene Wallace, Vivian Adams, Betty Farrow, Carrie Armond, Louise Dudley, Ruth Mitchell, Martha Alexander, Lucy Moseley, and Gertrude Kirkman became Tri-Hi-Y members and Charles Pearson, Leonard Dunston, Calvin Blake, Arthur Sasser, and John Pearsall became Hi-Y members. The N. H. A. members were Ellen Koonce, Helen Nesbit, Cleaster Fonville, Lucy Moseley, and Annie Nobles. The Math Club members were Joyce E. Best, Martha Bryant, Helen Nesbit, Della Collins, Alfreda Brown, Manior Fonville, Mary Murphy, and Ruth Murphy. Members of the Photography Club were Ruth Becton, Naomi Becton, John Stancil, Dora Williams, Annie Green, Manior Fonville, Theresa Stewart, Haywood Best, Jesse Best, William Boone and Ella Bell. Our third year we had Mrs. G. R. Brown, Mr. G. Fields, Mr. G. A. Harrison, and Mrs. Jones as advisors. We opened this year with excitement about our prom. As our Junior Class Officers we had, President - Leonard Dunston; Vice President - Vernon Robinson; Secretary - Martha Alexander; Treasurer - Eart Wiggins; Business Manager - Elijah Stewart. On a lovely spring night in May, the junior and senior prom was held in the very attractive gymnasium. Our theme was A Night in Fairyland. The floor was centered by a wishing well which contained the tasty beverage that was served by waiters and waitresses attired as fairies. The gratifications of the minds of everyone will always be symbolic for the success of our prom. For the first time in the history of our school, we won the State Championship in football by defeating High Point 13-6. Juniors who held outstanding positions were William Dixon, Raymond, Fred Lilly and John Stancil. Leonard Dunston, Eart Wiggins, and Charles Pearson played on our basketball team which reached the semi-finals in the State Basketball Championship. Members for eligibility of the Crown and Sceptre Club were Vivian Adams, Carrie Armond, Joyce E. We commenced the senior year of ' 57 and ' 58 with 96 seniors, under the advisor- ship of Mrs. J. W. Jones, Mr. G. A. Harrison, and Mr. R. W. Milteer. With the commencing of the year of ' 57, J. T. Barber seniors faced a dejected situation. We were bereft of Vernon Robinson, Senior Class President, who had passed during the summer, leaving memories of his outstanding leadership. New Yearbook Staff members were Louise Dudley, Charles Blount, Martha Alex¬ ander, Iris Hicks, Ella Bell, Theresa Stewart, Eleanor Jarmond, and Ellen Jones, while the Planet Staff members were Joyce McClease, Mittie Nelson, Helen Nesbit, Annie Nobles, Helen Sapp, and Elizabeth James. During our four years, the seniors of ' 58 had many perplexities, but now we can look back and wave at them with a smile with our accomplishments even though this is just a beginning. Oh, Barber School We must now depart Through years of labor We have come so far. For four years we have pulled together, Shared our mirth, our tears, our sorrows. Rain or shine, however the weather -- A brighter day always tomorrow. When we think of going Sorrow fills our hearts Father Time is saying now We soon must part. For all our joy and our success, We thank both parents and teachers who Have pointed the way to happiness And a life useful, good and true. Going away To start a different life There are more problems We must strive to solve. So farewell to you, dear J. T. Barber Our visit has been pleasant and grand.
