G ass Jfistorij On a typical autumn morning, September 1952, nearly one hundred forty-two young students entered the doors of West Street High School. Our first week was one of bashfulness and eagerness. During this year of 1952-53, our advisors were Mrs. L. B. Smith, Mrs. M. B. Danyus, Miss F. T. Boyd and Mr. W. G. Keyes. Our class participated in many activities. In drama was Robert Vails. In the N.H. A. were Lillian Robinson, Gloria Williams and Barbara Best. The Glee Club members were Betty Smith, Jessie Daves, Joyce Copper, Earnest Bennett, Ellen Pugh, Shirley Benton and Charlene White. The Tri-Hi-Y partici¬ pants were: Jessie Daves, Lillian Robinson, and Lois Melton. In the Dance Group were: Lillian Robinson, Jessie Daves, Charlene White and Barbara Payton. On the cheering squad were: Ellen Pugh. Lois Melton, Charlene White, Barbara Payton and Joyce Copper. On the basketball team were: Jessie Daves, Lillian Robinson, Charlene White and Charles Nelson. In the band were: Jessie Daves and William Dove. Re¬ presenting us in the Student Council were: Audrey Humphrey and Lillian Robinson. Joyce Copper was in the Math Club. Carl Wright joined the Industrial Arts Club. Representatives on the Bus Patrol were: Ernestine Wallace, Estella Murphy and Edna Simmons. Albert Hukins was on the Safety Patrol. A new year had now begun heralding the return of the sophisticated sophomores. The Student Council members were: Charles Nelson, Lillian Robinson, Audrey Humphrey and Jessie Daves. New members of the Tri-Hi-Y were: Shirley Benton, Joyce Copper, Miriam Bell and Shirley Chapman. Philip Wiggins, Charles Nelson, Wilbur Williams and William Dove were initiated in the Hi- Y. New Glee Club members were: Miriam Bell, Queenie Jarmond, Doris Hicks, Edna Simmons, Charles Nelson and William Dove. Newspaper Staff members were: Charlene White, Jessie Daves, Lucille Fon- ville, and Marion Batts. Doris Lofton and Janey Meadows joined the N.H. A. Cheerleaders were: Ellen Pugh, Lois Melton, Lillian Robinson and Charlene White. Library Assistants were: Lois Melton, Jessie Daves and Audrey Humphrey. We were guided through our sophomore year by Mrs. M. B. Danyus, Mr. W. G. Keyes, Miss F. T. Boyd and Mr. S. E. Coates who were our advisors. September 1954, we began the 1954-55 term with eighty-seven juniors. Mr. W. G. Keyes, Mrs. A. B. Bryant and Mr. S. E. Coates were our advisors. Our class officers were: President, Wilbur Williams; Vice President, Billy Chadwick; Secretary, Shirley Benton; Treasurer, Charlene White; Business Manager, Charles Nelson. Representatives on the basketball team were: Charles Nelson, Philip Wiggins, Barbara Best, Jessie Daves and Charlene White. Admitted to the Crown and Sceptre, scholastic honor society were: Lillian Robinson, Charlene White, Lucille Fonville, Miriam Bell, Lois Melton, Jessie Daves, Marion Batts and Wilbur Williams. The Chemistry Club members were: Carl Wright, Betty Smith, Elea¬ nor Banks, Jessie Daves, Miriam Bell, Philip Wiggins, Lucille Fonville, Shirley Benton, Lillian Robinson, Charlene White, Marion Batts, Eugenia Hickman, Janey Meadows, Mary Rhodes, Audrey Humphrey, Wilbur Williams, and Ernest Bennett. On the football team were: Edward Mendes, and Christopher Sim¬ mons. Charlene White became one of the Tri-Hi-Y ' s. The F.T.A. had Lillian Robinson, Barbara Payton, Lois Melton, Annie Daniels and Dollie White, among their members. The Library Club had Doris Lofton, Audrey Humphrey, Ellen Pugh, Charles Nelson and Charlene White as members. Cheerleaders were Lois Melton and Charlene White. Preparation for the Junior-Senior Prom highlighted the later activities of the Junior year. This prom will always be remembered as the Prom of 1954, ” An Evening In Paris, ” the best in the history of West Street High. Thus, we ended this year at West Street High with many events that will never be forgotten. We eagerly anticipated entering J. T. Barber High in the fall. We entered J. T. Barber High School on September 8, 1955 and were glad to reach our final year - a year to which we, as Seniors, have been eagerly looking forward. Having as our advisors, Mrs. A. B. Bryant and Mr. W. G. Keyes, the fifty-six seniors were off to a good start with the following officers: Wilbur Williams, President; Carl Wright, Vice President; Shirley Benton, Secretary; Marion Batts, Assistant Secretary; Lillian Robinson, Treasurer; Ellen Pugh, Business Manager, and Gloria Williams, Parliamentarian. Lucille Fonville bequeaths her Bobby socks to Ruth Mumford; and her intelligence to Harold Walston. William Dove wills his seat in the senior class to his sister, Ida, and his ability to come to school every day to William Dixon. Joyce Copper bequeaths her charming personality to Annie Best and to Doris Miller, her dignity. Miriam Bell bequeaths her personality and the ability to get along with others to Kay Franklin and Janet White. James Hatch wills his knowledge to his brother, Albert Jones. Marion Batts wills to Dorothea Kearney her scholastic ability and bequeaths the art of driving a car to Madelyn Stewart. Jessie Mae Annette Daves wills her position as head majorette in the band to Kay Franklin, and scholastic ability to Loretta Ryder. Charles Nelson wills his seat in World Geography to Walter Bellamy; and his eyes to William Dixon. Barbara Payton bequeaths to her sister Carolyn, her ability to finish high school, and position in the Crown and Sceptre Club to Percy Jenkins. Lois Melton wills her musical ability to anyone who can master it. Carl Wright wills his intelligence, personality, and popularity to Calvin Simmons. Charlene White wills her intellectual ability to her sisters and brothers, her knowledge of chemistry to Loretta Ryder, and her position in the Tri-Hi-Y to Claretta Franks. Lillian Robinson wills to her brother and cousins her ability to finish high school. Wilbur Williams wills his popularity to Vernon Robinson and Bennie Thompson, and his position as senior class president to James Simmons. Many new clubs have organized during our senior year and the seniors are well represented in all of them, filling most of the major offices. We, as seniors, are glad to have been the first eighth-graders of J. T. Barber School and are equally as proud to be the first graduates of J. T. Barber High School.
