mall numbers in turnout and wincolumn Although this was one of the poorest league finishes Coach Bob Hegner's varsity tennis team ever had, they ended up with a nearly respectable 5 win and 8 loss record. A middle-of-the-league team by right, Morton West took eighth place out of nine teams. The fact that the season was shorter than the previous year but with the same amount of games hampered the team's progress because two starters, the Wojciechowski brothers, ran into illness about mid- season. Commented Coach Hegner, We had a lot of misfortunes and bad breaks, If t he law of averages works, next year we should be in good shape. Two of the happier events ofthe season were the win over arch-rival Morton East and the winning performance of Freshman Jim Giannis. Playing at second and third singles on the varsity, Jim won two-thirds of his matches. Stated Netman Roman Wojciechowski, There was a lot of good team effort, and if we want to win in the years to come, we need to have team effort. 'l'he major factor hindering the froshssoph tennis teams was a poor turnout of players. About one fifth as many players came out as did for last, season's teams. Instead of the usual two underclass teams consisting of fourteen players, there were only six boys to face separate freshman and sophomore teams. All freshman and some so- phomore matches were forfeited. Confronted with a wide serve from his opponent, Jim Campagna tabove, left! uses a backhand to send the ball cross-court. In a DPVL match Jim Giannis tleftl tightens his arm and prepares a forehand return as his eyes follow the ball to his racket strings. TENNIS 81

She won district competition and completed an outstanding season hy going downstate. Lily Ma-idak and -loanne Cliannis, a doubles team. also competed downstate While the varsity's lirst doubles team. xloyce Nelson and Michelle Fonte, performed well at, home in the regular season. The junior varsity team ended their season in sixth place and scored a total five wins and six losses. Liz Wiet. stood out in junior varsity competition with an excellent six and two record.
