Kammerertmakes third best tune nn Although the 1978 varsity swim team was not as outstanding as some of the many teams Jim Ellinger has coached, he felt they did a good job. Two of the year's hest swimmers, liou Kammerer and Dan Kalina, graduated with outstanding scholarships. Kammerer ended up the season as an all-American in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle event. He has made all-state for three years in a row, and his latest time in the freestyle event was the third hest in the history of the meet. .loe Alhanese. the first West freshman swimmer ever to qualify in a state meet. also qualified as a sophomore for the state I00 yard freestyle event. Commented Coach Ellinger on the '78 swim team, Mr, Will and l were very impressed with the improvement and hard work of the team. llnder the Coaching of Mr. Earl McMahon. the freshman team finished their season in first place. The so- phomore team did not do as well, mainly due to low team membership. Coach McMahon remarked, Both levels did a good joh. I only wish more people would come out for the sport. The lack of people willing to try out for the sport could he due to its physical difficulty, hut those who tried found it is not without reward. Said Junior Swimmer Gary Firtik, Swimming is a real hard sport, but you use every muscle in your body and that's good. Braced for the shock of the chilly water beneath him, Lou Kammercr tabove, rightj explodes from the starting platform. Pacing himself for the remaining laps of his race, Dave Shubinski trightl uses a smooth, steady stroke to conserve his strength. '16 SWIMMING -

The entire team worked together, said Karen Conti, a member of thejunior varsity softball team. This, along with Coach Jerry StiVerson's discipline and knowledge of the game brought out the talent in all of usf' This talent rewarded the varsity team with second place in the conference and the junior varsity with first. One of the main strengths of both softball teams was pitching, in which Sue Jansky and Jessica Hoggard of the varsity team and Jamie Sabbach and Marsha Hoggard of the junior varsity team excelled. Linda Sedivy paced the varsity team with an excellent batting average of .521. Sedivy, co-captain ofthe team with Leona Tranauskas, also made the all-conference team for the second year in a row. The varsity team nominated Sharon Cizek and Marla Vesley as the most valuable players and Laura Grisafe as the most improved. The junior varsity team nominated Mary Stacho as the most valuable player and Sharon Nelson as the most improved.
