Coach Don Matheny stated, The boys were inexperienced as a team. They had the potential but didn't use it. Golfer Mike Finn agreed, 'tThe team didn't perform to its fullest ability this year. With six starters returning the team should peak next yearf, Joe Cernik and John Kunkel placed second and sixth respectively out of fifty-four golfers in the league meet. Gary Janda placed sixth out of seventy-eight in the district. Having had no previous experience as a team, the frosh-soph golfers found that they faced problems similar to the varsity's. Most of the underclassmen golfed an average game but hoped for a better season next year as they become accustomed to DesPlaines Valley League competition. For the varsity soccer team, 1978 was a year for developing and refining skills, Although most of the players had experience in the sport prior to high school. the varsity team as a whole was young and unaccustomed to league competition. Besides their inexperience, the players were relatively small in size compared to those of other teams. These combined weak points accounted for a rather disappointing season record of eleven wins. seven losses, and two ties. t'oach Bill Stamper commented, Because of a lack of maturity on the team we did not have that killer instinct to finish off a team after we had them on the ground. Fans of the soccer team were let down by its performance also. I was so disappointed when the soccer team didn't go downstatef' said JoAnn Marciszewski. The last four years West has had such a great soccer team that l wished they could have progressed farther in the finals. The soccer season was not without, highlights. I-Sig wins included the games against Morton East, Wheaton- Warrenville, Addison Trail, and Quigley South. Outstanding individual perfor- mances came from all-conference players, Rich Liska and Mike Swade. Another all-conference player, Lou Josek. was also named all-sectional and most valuable player. Team Member tlerry Gomez added his name to the record books by committing 56 fouls in one season and thus bettering the previous record held by Morton West graduate Joe Svec.
