Although many students at Morton West hardly remember the enormous amount of snow that fell in 1967, few will soon forget the snowstorm now referred to as the Great Blizzard of '79. What the National Weather Service innocently forecasted as 2 to 4 inches quickly piled into 20.3 inches between the days of January 12 and January 14. High winds and low temperatures accompanied these tons of snow to make snow removal extremely dif- ficult. Needless to say, travel ranged from hazardous to impossible. To meet the travel difficulties Morton, giving students their first snow days off in years, closed the doors of both the East and West buildings. Hopeful- ly listening to the radio for the magic number 20l became a nightly ritual for all, and for four days during the course of the blizzard, students and teachers breathed a sigh of relief that their journey through the Arctic wastelands had been cancelled. One bad effect the storm had on Morton was to disrupt final exam week. Since teachers usually review the previous semester's work the week before final exams, students missed out on very valuable lesson time, but many agreed that the vacation was well worth the inconvenience. lj Wary of the slick, ice-covered pavements, Lisa Theodore slowly walks between huge piles of plowed snow. 21 With most sidewalks im- passable, students trudge through an im- provised pathway across West's front lawn. 35 Joining the school's sign in wishing students a Season's Greeting, mounds of snow literally bury Morton West. 41 An earth science display case grimly gives a sign of the times: cold and snow. 55 With an epidemic of collapsed garages, Bill Chandler braves the heights to remove heavy, wet snow from his. Students control the press Through the TV, the car radio on the way to school, and periodicals used in school classes, the media permeated students' minds with its coverage of present day society. One of the most enduring forms of media is the newspaper. Here at Morton, students exercised control over the press by joining the Falcon new- spaper staff. The Falcon has enjoyed many years of recognition for its articles. According to Mr. John Stebbins, adviser of the paper, We're working to be the best we can be. We are the best we can be, yet we hope to be even better. ' ,Other student publications in- cluded the Talon yearbook and the Egg, the student literary magazine. These attempts at understanding the media and its influence upon people was perhaps one of the greatest lessons experienced by students at West. Books, magazines, and new- spapers were better understood by students who helped create some communication of their own. FALCON GENERAL STAFF-FRONT ROW: N. Chantha. SECOND ROW: R. Regan, P. Finn. THIRD ROW: T. Serbick, T. Ambrosia, Mr. J. Stebbins, Adviser. FOURTH ROW: M. Regan, A. Barth, L. Larson. BACK ROW: S. Hoskin, D. Neopolitan, J. Bergthold. lj After thoughtfully perusing an article for the Falcon, Lori Marczak discusses her opinions with News Editor Joann Marciszews' ki. 21 While emphasizing a point, Mr. Richard Koehler turns to the Wall Street Journal. 35 While Mr. John Stebbins proofreads her story, Chris Alcorn notes his revisions.
