Although many students at Morton West hardly remember the enormous amount of snow that fell in 1967, few will soon forget the snowstorm now referred to as the Great Blizzard of '79. What the National Weather Service innocently forecasted as 2 to 4 inches quickly piled into 20.3 inches between the days of January 12 and January 14. High winds and low temperatures accompanied these tons of snow to make snow removal extremely dif- ficult. Needless to say, travel ranged from hazardous to impossible. To meet the travel difficulties Morton, giving students their first snow days off in years, closed the doors of both the East and West buildings. Hopeful- ly listening to the radio for the magic number 20l became a nightly ritual for all, and for four days during the course of the blizzard, students and teachers breathed a sigh of relief that their journey through the Arctic wastelands had been cancelled. One bad effect the storm had on Morton was to disrupt final exam week. Since teachers usually review the previous semester's work the week before final exams, students missed out on very valuable lesson time, but many agreed that the vacation was well worth the inconvenience. lj Wary of the slick, ice-covered pavements, Lisa Theodore slowly walks between huge piles of plowed snow. 21 With most sidewalks im- passable, students trudge through an im- provised pathway across West's front lawn. 35 Joining the school's sign in wishing students a Season's Greeting, mounds of snow literally bury Morton West. 41 An earth science display case grimly gives a sign of the times: cold and snow. 55 With an epidemic of collapsed garages, Bill Chandler braves the heights to remove heavy, wet snow from his.
