Ecology Club revives endangered habitats W? A-M. ' y - eaa: -'1-' 1 N-...NM ,,,.,, . . .,k, , f..,. .,.,,..N. ,cc .',' The limited environment of school, home, and work didn't stop students at West from learning more about their world. One club that students participated in to learn more about helping less fortunate people was the Medical Careers Club. The club functioned as a Red Cross Youth Club and worked for the betterment of human relations. Karen Rezek felt that the purpose of the club was to help other people. It's a great feeling knowing that you're helping someone. Alicia Rabiega added, We have fun and meet other people. Also we help people out and have fun doing it! An example of one worthwhile project was the collect- ing and filling of Christmas stockings for the needy. The study of nature was a main purpose of Ecology Club. Members in the club tried to preserve ecologically endangered areas such as the Wolf Road Prairie. Other activities includ- ed caring for the nature center, organizing paper drives, and visiting the Fullersburg Nature Preserve to observe the beautiful, fragile works of nature found there. lj Cleaning the nature site with the Ecology Club shows Laura Bartik's belief in man's need to care for his environment. 25 Aided by Mrs. Louise Lavenau and Mrs. Evelyn Vocelka in constructing friendship boxes, Denise Kostka and Alicia Rabiega fulfill their duties as Red Cross Club members. 31 At Brookfield Zoo's viewing window, Alice Jczck and Bonnie Kovacic make friends with one of thc most intelligent animals on carth, thc dolphin. Science Fiction zaps West Reading it fills in gaps of the mind, viewing it gives a sense of wonder, and discussing it sharpens the mind. That's how Dave Shepherd felt about science fiction, basis of the new Science Fiction Club. Since its beginnings last year the club took on a new adviser, Mr. Malcom Anderson. He organized trips to see Symphony of the Stars at Alpine Valley and a showing of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Model U.N. also greeted two new advisers, Mr. Conrad Bujnowski and Mr. Jim Hennessy. Doreen Preber explained, The purpose of Model U.N. is to be aware of what is happening in the world around you. Members experienced this at the Lake Geneva Conference, at which they strived to match their previous six best delegation awards. The American Field Service re- turned this year as TALL, short for Travel and Learning Lands. In order to save money, exchange students sponsored by TALL who came from South and Central America stayed only half a year. This year TALL welcomed Monica Leal de Freitas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to West. U Experiencing the sensation of being a gyroscope, Katherine Lacina glides across the floor. 25 Discussing plans for TALL activities, Doriann Mysicka, Lisa Tronchetti, Debbie Whitney and Sue Loess prepare for a social. 35 Readying themselves for a trip to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Doreen Preber and Tom Zielinski practice debating techniques in a mock United Nations session. 48 MAN AND HIS WORLD - TALL, MODEL UN SCIENCE FICTION CLUB
