I D Since field practice goes on no matter what the weather may be, band members dress accordingly to combat nature-'s forces. 21 Parading up Home Avenue, the marching band heads for the homecoming football game. 35 Under the experienced direction of Mr. Robert Dvorak, orchestra musicians rehearse diligently for an upcoming concert. 0 Pounding out a steady beat, Scott Willett provides the percussive backbone essential to the Jazz Band's driving sound. 51 His face a reflection of the pensive mood of the piece he plays, Jon Yordy skillfully coaxes a mellow sound from his cello. 63 With Mr. Tom Fiala, Laura Brda gets into the swing of conducting a band. 4.2 MUSIC' - BAND, ORCHESTRA Q -'-'23-' 'I ,sw .NLM 1 drag

Led Zeppelin, Styx, Kiss, and many other well-known groups and recording artists like Barry Manilow and Billy Joel permeated the listen- ing and even the dress of most students. For that matter, anything related to the music world intrigued almost everyone who tuned in a radio. For many music offered an escape from the pressures of home or school. The multitude of song titles and lyrics guaranteed a release that was suitable for the macho man or perhaps gave inspiration and courage to King Tut fans. Sometimes merely listening to the music was not enough, those with disco fever joined the crowds on the flashing floors to dance out the aggravations of the week. For the talented, simply listening to others produce music was not enoughg they banded together to make their own. Guitarists, pianists, and even kazoo players joined ranks and played at parties, dances, and any other places that would indulge them. Others preferred to play solely for art in the privacy of their own homes. The luxury of losing themselves in music, whether it be Bach or rock, made even the most boring music lesson worthwhile. In spite of the varied tastes in artist or instrument, most agreed that without music it would be kind of quiet out there. nu'-F W ,...-all 5 'A .1 :gk 5- - ST: M MUSIC 41

Bands, orchestra make difference in MD X Rx - far -4.32 it X Tag Tx ,N :,h . ,.1: I have been playing violin for seven years, and the music we play for concerts is really challenging, said Barbara Kapsa, an orchestra member. Music filled the minds of many Morton West' students. The proof was a wide range of talented musicians performing in band and orchestra. MD, as the Music Depart- ment's patrons affectionately refer to it, consisted of a variety of perform- ing units. The marching band parad- ed at homecoming and during football halftimes. The concert band consist- ed of top students selected according to their ability. Both West and East musicians participated in the district-wide orchestra. They per- formed in concert and in the pit orchestra for the fall musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. 1 6 MUSIC - BAND, ORCHESTRA 43
