if ARTISTIC EXPRESSION DRAMA 35

Page 38 text:

ERT ARES Of all the freedoms that people value, the freedom to express their artistic talents is perhaps one of the most precious. Artistic expression flourished at West as students danced, painted, sang, and acted throughout the year. The Physical Education Department provided an artistic outlet by making a modern dance course available to all interest- ed students. In Fine Arts, jewelry and pottery classes topped the list of favorite courses taken by students who felt the need to express their feelings through the mediums of paint, metal, or clay. Another outlet for expression could be found in photography. Although many con- sider the photograph to be an artificial art form, students who had little aptitude for drawing produced startingly beautiful effects through this expanding medium. In Language Arts Morton stude.nts found, in classes and after school productions, a medium of artistic expression. Participants memorized lines and fashioned costumes for such produc- tions as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and other dramatic works. For the students at Morton West, all their efforts made through art were advances toward the freedom which people will always hold dear. ll Carefully filing a piece of metal, Kim Nepras uses her expertise to create an original piece of jewelry. 22 In a scene from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Steve Underwood dazzles his audience with a song and dance routine. 31 Examining a strip of negatives, Photographer Tim Capua searches for the shot which best captures his subject. 45 A special Shakespear- ean assembly utilizes classic drama to educate and to encourage self-expression. 51 In a show of versatility, Becky Kessel acts in Morton College's production of Godspell.
