Cheerleaders nab trophies For the cheerleading squad, the year turned out to be one of awards. After winning' first place at Illinois State, they proceeded to a competi- tion sponsored by the Dynamic Cheerleading Association at Proviso East. The varsity squad took first place ahead of nineteen other high school squads. The cheerleaders provided entertainment and promot- ed school spirit. As stated by Debbie Sinnott, Cheerleading encourages fans to get rowdy at games. It also gives fans something to look at during breaks in the game. The Pom Pon Girls also did their share of competing and winning. At Rich Central High School, the squad took second place in originality, third place in prop dance, and another third in kickline. Dawn Mangini, Peggy Gilbert, and Diana Jaworek composed the award winning dances. At the end of a year of competition, the squad had accumulated ten awards: five first places, two of which were earned in the originality category and three in overall compe- titiong one second place, three third places, and a squad showmanship trophy. They also earned the ranking of third best in the Midwest. Whether competing or just having fun, the pom pons and cheerleaders comprised a large part of the school's extra-curricular activities. I enjoy dancing and being actively involved in what I do. I feel a sense of pride knowing I am part of a successful organization that has a very good reputation, said Pom Pon Captain Diana Jaworek. Track Aids run marathon smoothly Working at Berwyn's annual Houby Parade, West's Track Aids participated in organizing the Houby Run down Cermak Road. The girls passed out numbers and t-shirts before the race and afterwards tallied scores and places. In this way Track Aids not only gave a needed helping hand at school meets but also exhibited their community aware- ness. One of the largest of the sport aid groups, the Swim Maids, performed a vitayservice. The girls held the responsibility of timing all girls' and boys' swim meets. Their times were then used to double check those registered by the poolside electronic scoreboard. These aid groups and other service-oriented clubs, as explained by Wrestling Aid Lori Boyd, Keep up school spirit, aid coaches, and at the same time provide fun. TRACK AIDS-FRONT ROW: K. Venzon, M.
