Cheerleaders nab trophies For the cheerleading squad, the year turned out to be one of awards. After winning' first place at Illinois State, they proceeded to a competi- tion sponsored by the Dynamic Cheerleading Association at Proviso East. The varsity squad took first place ahead of nineteen other high school squads. The cheerleaders provided entertainment and promot- ed school spirit. As stated by Debbie Sinnott, Cheerleading encourages fans to get rowdy at games. It also gives fans something to look at during breaks in the game. The Pom Pon Girls also did their share of competing and winning. At Rich Central High School, the squad took second place in originality, third place in prop dance, and another third in kickline. Dawn Mangini, Peggy Gilbert, and Diana Jaworek composed the award winning dances. At the end of a year of competition, the squad had accumulated ten awards: five first places, two of which were earned in the originality category and three in overall compe- titiong one second place, three third places, and a squad showmanship trophy. They also earned the ranking of third best in the Midwest. Whether competing or just having fun, the pom pons and cheerleaders comprised a large part of the school's extra-curricular activities. I enjoy dancing and being actively involved in what I do. I feel a sense of pride knowing I am part of a successful organization that has a very good reputation, said Pom Pon Captain Diana Jaworek. Boosters 'bear up' under spirited causes Individually or as a group, members of the Booster Club radiat- ed the school spirit that was so very essential to the success of Morton's teams. The main purpose of the Booster Club was to spread school spirit throughout the student body. Along with supporting the various teams and sparking student interest, Booster Club found many worthwhile causes in which to become involved. Its members sponsored a Kodiak bear by the name of Dinca living at the Brookfield Zoo. The job of sponsoring the bear included paying for his food forean entire year. Another activity undertaken by the Boosters was offering assistance as guides for College Night and also for the PTO Parents' Night. . Performing agile routines during the homecoming parade, Baton Club members provided their own kind of school spirit. Although it was the first year that they didn't perform at wrestling matches, members met on a regular basis and concentrated on improving their techniques. The pep assemblies, both manda- tory and voluntary, also helped further school spirit. These two clubs and assembly efforts led the way for others to win the battle against apathy and instill school and team pride into students. BATON CLUB-FRONT ROW: K. Jackowiak, S. Mullennax.
