Freshmen Skip Algebra, Enter Geometry Classes Having completed the algebra requirements in eighth grade or in summer school, over thirty freshmen skipped the class and enrolled in geometry. Never in M0rton's history have so many freshmen qualified for sophomore math. All math classes expanded their fields of study to include a unit in computer programming. Last year's purchase of a computer allowed this addition to become effective. Mrs. L. Hruby wrote a unit for computer use in her geometry classes. The algebra and advanced algebra classes replaced their old books with new ones. Mr. M. Harmon assumed the position of acting department head when Mr. R. Lindhorn left the Math Department on sabbatical leave. Encircled by a student's complicated geometric design, Terry Moran Qabove, leftl follows his teacher's explana- tion of the mathematical material covered in his book. Framed by a classmate's compass, David Mendez tleftj, a freshman enrolled in geometry, uses a protractor to put his problem on the board for fellow classmates. During one of her geometry classes, Mrs. L. Hruby tabovel explains a difficult part of the previous evening's assignment so that her students will comprehend it. ACADEMICS 33

Somewhat balancing these increases, enrollment in introductory physical science decreased by twenty-five per cent. Physics students visited the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, for the engineering open house. Advanced biology and advanced chemistry students attended the open house at Hope College. Two biology students attended the convocation with Dr. M. DeBakey at Northwestern University. Miss P. Nakayama, Miss M. Ripple, and Mrs. P. Licht attended a field study course on the prairie. 34 ACADEMICS In biology Bonnie Collins labove, rightl guesses at the content of a box by evaluating its characteristics.
