Sophomores' New Coach Places Cagers in Fourth Sophomore cagers finished a fine season this year. Under their new coach, Mr. W. Porter, the team's record was seven wins and five losses. This record put the sophomores in fourth place in conference play. Coach Porter stated that his goal was to help the team's offense and defense by using new techniques. The two freshman teams finished at opposite ends of the standings. Freshman 'A' team completed their season in seventh place with four wins and eight losses. On the other hand the frosh 'B' team ended with nine wins and three losses to put them in second place. Both teams, however, learned the same fundamental techniques of basketball defense and offense in their daily drills. Getting past his opponents, Alex Woitovich Qleftj drives for the hoop and lays up the ball for two points. While attempting to pass it to a teammate, Joe Stacho Kaboveb keeps his opponent well away from the ball. ATHLETICS 207

Swim Team Sends Two To Dive in State Meet Finishing another good season, the varsity swim team had six wins and four losses. An out- standing meet was the Morton East In- vitational, West placed first out of six schools. Keeping up a tradition of good divers, the swim team sent two boys to the IHSA State Meet, Dave Muth, who placed third at the dis- trict meet, and Mike Martin, who placed fourth in the district and was the first freshman ever to go to a state meet. While the sophomore team finished the season with seven wins and three losses, the freshman swimmers were DPVL champions. With an overall record of nine wins and two losses, the team was undefeated in their impressive league endeavor. During a freestyle event, Mike Nekolny fleftb comes up for a breath of air as he tights to finish first.
