Music Students Organize New, Active Music Club 180 ACTIVITIES Some concerned music students settled the controversy of their department's entering a float in the homecoming parade by forming the Morton Music Club. The clubis members proved to be active in their rookie year by having bake sales and sponsoring concerts and trips. The band presented a program at MacNeal Hospital and continued its regular school perfor- mances. Our program is governed by what the school plans as in sport assemblies. Their program hasnit changed so ours hasn't, reasoned Mr. J. Frantik, band director. Mr. R. Dvorak stated that this year was expected to be the last year of a one orchestra program because of an increase in enrollment of students. MWWWWM

Royal Hunt of the Sun Captures Sixth in State Last yearis spring contest play Was Royal Hunt of the San by Peter Schaffer. The play took first in district and sectional competition and sixth in state competition. This was the first time either Morton school advanced to the state finals. The play was directed by Mr. F. Meyer, who also directed the fall musical, Fiddler on the Roof. The cast and crew performed outstan- dingly to make the well known musical a big success. Two other groups connected with the Drama Department were the forensics team and the Readers' Theatre. Morton West hosted the district IHSA speech competition which encom- passed eleven individual events, drama, and readers' theatre in early March. ,fi .fi X Yente, played by Ann Slivinski Qabove, leftj, convinces Barb Melka, portraying Golde, to marry off a daughter in Fiddler on the Roof. Using her persuasive powers, Barb Melka Qabovej convinces Vito Dambrosio to see things her way during a rehearsal of The Seagull. Readers' Theatre members Qleftj shout Hola in unison. sv' After many long weeks of practice, the Morton West Jazz Band tabove, leftl premieres in their first school concert of the year by playing a collection of familiar tunes from the forties, fifties, and sixties. In preparation for the orchestra's February concert, Nancy Stastny tleftj fine tunes her cello in the prac- tice room. The orchestra performs two concerts each year in addition to its various other activities. At one of the weekly, Monday evening practice sessions, Mr. J. Frantik fabovel strives for perfection as he diligently directs the students of the Concert Band who are preparing for the spring band concert. ACTIVITIES 181
