At the nursery school held by the Home Economics Department this spring, students such as Kim Karafa were able to gain practical ex- perience in handling children. Here Kim aids a child in coloring. Interior decoration and home furnishing are important units in any homemalfing class. Phyllis lovino and Judy Lanenga apply acquired knowlege by rearranging a floral piece. New Course Offers Experience ln Child Care and Development lVlorton's Home Economics Department, which both in- troduced new courses and revised old ones, offered a new child care and development course this year. This co-edu- cational course made its debut second semester and was open to all interested upperclassmen. Primarily instituted to help students acquire a better understanding of child behavior, this class gave the students a practical adapta- tion by arranging a special nursery school. Home Economics' foods and clothing, a most popular and highly recommended course for freshman girls, con- tinued to provide a stable basis for other department courses. Among the other courses, foods and boys, foods studied major units in food preservation, good nutrition, and bal- anced meal planning in family units. Clothing classes were offered on a number of levels of development to meet with the varying degrees of student aptitude and progress in sewing from the simple construction of a cotton garment to the advanced tailoring of a wool suit.

The new locker area was greatly needed to eliminate storage problems. ln this painting and illustration class, Miss D. A. Mavigliano carefully molds her lump of clay into the be- ginnings of a beautful piece of pottery. Pottery is one of the special- ized courses offered after basic art to interested students. New Doors and Sound Panels Purchased for Music Section The Fine Arts Department is divided into two sections: art and music. Last fall the art section presented colorful art exhibits in the foyer. On display were works in many mediums by both Morton students and professional artists. Lectures on each exhibit were offered to the faculty and student body, and the exhibits served as studies for many art classes. Basic art, an exploratory workshop in the field of art, was the prerequisite for all art courses. On completion of this course, a wide selection of specialized classes and workshops were offered. These included dress design, jewelry, printmaking, sculpture, painting and illus- tration, pottery, and photography. The music section added a new double-door entrance to the bandroom this year. Opening into E-hall, it greatly im- proved storing facilities and eliminated traffic problems in that area. New portable acoustical panels were also pur- chased to improve sound during concerts. Among the classes in this section were band, orchestra, mixed chorus, vocal workshop, and aeolian choir. All music students had the opportunity to make arrangements to participate in the an- nual Shagbark Music Camp being held this summer. X 'Jiillvfi W' Z. 4

William Troff, clad in safety goggles, uses an oxyacetylene welding torch to finish his project in general metals. Safety goggles are re- quired by state law in most industrial art courses. Industrial Arts Dept. Prepares Students for a Creative Future Enrolling in an industrial arts course is almost an es- sential part of any hoy's education at Morton. The de- partment is equipped with excellent facilities and offers a wide range of subjects from which a student can choose. One of the most popular courses is industrial arts survey, a one-year major course for freshmen that studies six dif- ferent areas during the school year. This course and gen- eral drafting as a minor are the only two courses open to freshmen. After the freshman year, the student can spe- cialize in any area he wishes. Architectural drafting, auto mechanics, machine drafting, electric mechanics, general metal work, graphic arts, machine shop, patternmaking, and woodworking are courses offered at West. Many ad- ditional courses are offered at the East building to provide other advanced training. The junior or senior may enroll in special vocational industrial subjects that meet for three- hours a day for a period of two years. Upon completion, the student receives a certificate denoting skill in the area. -NN... 4.
