'N .fu-nal b By participating in one of the new experimental general math classes, Ed Karlovic has the opportunity to work and check his homework problems on a modern electric calculator introduced this past year. Janet leppson carefully plots a parabolic curve under the watchful eyes of Carl Banji, Mr. J. D. Ramsey, and Benita Bialy. Standing by the .map of France, Carol Tomiska, a first-year French student, displays her linguistic lfnowlege to the class by explaining a sentence she has correctly written on the board. Charmaine Mrazelc and Charles Forsyth carry out a conversation in front of a bulletin board display on OEDIPUS REX, a Greek tragedy, studied in their Latin class as part of a unit in ancient culture. Foreign Language Teachers Use Tapes as Supplementary Material Morton West is one of the few high schools in the area to offer, seven different foreign languages to its students. Czech, French, German, Italian, Russian, Latin, and Span- ish are offered each semester to students in both beginning and advanced classes. ln the teaching of languages, Mor- ton's teachers are fortunate to have the excellent facilities of the modern language laboratory at their disposal. ln- dividual student pronounciation can be studied on a candid basis, and effective help can be administered. The depart- ment is well-equipped with an excellent supply of record- ing tapes. These tapes containing lessons, songs, poems, literature, and other supplementary materials are at the language teachers, finger-tips to provide a varied and in- teresting curriculum. Beginning classes study grammar principles, irregular verbs, pronunciation, and cultural aspects of the countries in which their language is spoken. Advanced classes con- tinue to learn the grammar and cultural aspects but also study major literary works in the respective languages. Top students in each language participate in Chicago-area con- tests with other high school language students.

As Bradley Hahn, Clyde Filas, and Gerald Moutvic watch, Mr. 0. V. Myers compares a regular slide rule to the enlarged model used to demonstrate principles of slide rule mechanics. Incoming Freshmen Participate In Special Summer Mathematics The importance of mathematics cannot be overly stressed in todayis computerized world. Starting with general math or algebra, students can fulfill their chosen college,s re- quirements by following a wide variety of sequences. Sub- jects such as solid and plane geometry, advanced algebra, trigonometry, college algebra, college trigonometry, and slide rule are offered. An honors program is also offered to selected students in which advanced principles are taught along with the basic curriculum. , This past summer, Morton West was one of a dozen schools in the state that participated in the Illinois State Summer Program for Gifted Students in Mathematics and Science. The program was open to incoming freshmen selected on the basis of academic performance and recom- mendations hy former math and science teachers. Following successful completion of the eight-week course held here at West, the students earned two units of credit and were enrolled in geometry and biology classes in the fall. Mr. M. Harmon discusses Liz Samec's advanced algebra problem with her. By discussing each problem in this manner, necessary cor- rections can be made, and future mistakes can be avoided. X
