Standing by the .map of France, Carol Tomiska, a first-year French student, displays her linguistic lfnowlege to the class by explaining a sentence she has correctly written on the board. Charmaine Mrazelc and Charles Forsyth carry out a conversation in front of a bulletin board display on OEDIPUS REX, a Greek tragedy, studied in their Latin class as part of a unit in ancient culture. Foreign Language Teachers Use Tapes as Supplementary Material Morton West is one of the few high schools in the area to offer, seven different foreign languages to its students. Czech, French, German, Italian, Russian, Latin, and Span- ish are offered each semester to students in both beginning and advanced classes. ln the teaching of languages, Mor- ton's teachers are fortunate to have the excellent facilities of the modern language laboratory at their disposal. ln- dividual student pronounciation can be studied on a candid basis, and effective help can be administered. The depart- ment is well-equipped with an excellent supply of record- ing tapes. These tapes containing lessons, songs, poems, literature, and other supplementary materials are at the language teachers, finger-tips to provide a varied and in- teresting curriculum. Beginning classes study grammar principles, irregular verbs, pronunciation, and cultural aspects of the countries in which their language is spoken. Advanced classes con- tinue to learn the grammar and cultural aspects but also study major literary works in the respective languages. Top students in each language participate in Chicago-area con- tests with other high school language students.
