Open to the entire student body, the Mixed Chorus was the second largest singing group in the school. All incoming freshman students interested in becom- ing members of Mortonis choral program were placed in this chorus. Limited auditions were held early in fall with the only requirement being that the student could sing on pitch. Elementary note-reading was taught in class by the director, Mr. F. W. Smalley. The group participated with the advanced choral groups in the Christmas and spring con- certs. AAAA GIRLS, CHOIR . . . Memhers of this choir, one of the largest choral groups at West, enjoyed participating in the presenta- tion of the Christmas and spring choral concerts. The only prerequisite for one joining the Girls' Choir was her having had at least one year of singing experience. For this yearls Christmas presentation, the choir performed Tchaikovskyls NUTCRACKER SUITE, which was adapted for voices and which featured a hallet clancer. The Girls, Choir presented music from several musical periods for the spring concert. Competitive auditions were held early in the fall to select this seventeen-member vocal group. There had previously been two such groups: however, this year they were combined. The girls were selected on a combination of musical sight-reading ability and their tone quality. Under the direction of Mr. F. W. Smalley, the Harmonettes sang at many church and civic affairs in addition to their school programs and concerts. The highlight of their singing engagements was the opportunity to participate in uChristmas Around The World at the Museum of Science and lndustry. Advanced music students who had been engaged in the choral program for at least two years comprised this vocal ensemble, also known as the Vocal Workshop. The Madrigal Singers was noted for its small membership and its performances without piano accompani- ment. Directed by Mr. J. S. Chiado, members of Vocal Workshop performed many times during the course of the school year for civic and church groups and for elementary schools in the immediate area.
