Page 25l Members really work to attain spectacular costumes. Varied tabrics are chosen with care, and styles are selected to co-ordinate with the numbers that they will be used tor. These cos! tumes are made by the members of the club, and they are part ot the reason why the Crea- tive Dance show is such a success. Weeks be- tore the show is put on, members decorate posters which are then displayed throughout the school. Tickets are sold and distributed by the members, and they work to make their show a success. It a girl has had previous dance training, she will 'rind it to her advantage to avail herselt ot this course. Creative Dance is not only a club, it is also a class. ln order to be recommended tor such a class, a girl must possess an 85 in gym, have a beginner's swim card, be passing in all major and minor sub- jects, and possess a sense ot timing and rhythm. Members ot the class are urged to join the club as extra practice will help to increase their prohciency in dancng. Atter two years ot participation in the class and or club, a girl is awarded an This award is presented to her at an annual banquet which is held at a restaurant in the Chicagoland area. Creative dance club also has otticers just as any other club. Otticers at East were: President, Judy Sredl, Vice-President, Madeline Uss, Secretary Laurie Vesely, and Treasurer, Mary Black. Otiti- cers at West were: President, Pauline Rasso- gianis, Vice-President, Carol Gaul, Secretary, Mimi Rotunno, and Treasurer, Marilyn Slaby. Through the eiqorts ot these ofhcers the club has attained the tine name it has today. A girl may join the club during her tour years at Morton, and she is eligible to be recommended for this club during her freshman, sophomore, and junior years. , W l A CREATIVE DANCE . . . From Here To There was the title ot this year's annual Creative Dance show. This show has become a tradition with Mortonites and is eagerly looked torward to every year. Girls who are interested in de- veloping grace, poise, and proper body align- ment may ioin this club. Better known to its members as Orchesis, it is divided into two groups: the beginners and the pros . The pur- pose ot Orchesis is to give those interested in modern dancing further knowledge in it and the opportunity to create dances ot their own. Orchesis also co-operates with other depart- ments tor shows, assemblies, and other activi- ties. In Orchesis a girl has the opportunity to develop her individual talents. A girl must possess a sense ot rhythm and timing in order to be recommended to this popular club. Crea- tive dancing induces rhythmic organization and individuality. The dancers seek to express emotions through ,movements in their dances. One ot the major proiects which a girl must participate in is the creation ot an individual dance which she then performs for her tellow members. In the club the girls are taught in- termediate and elementary rhythms, body orientation and mechancs, and contemporary dance. In previous years creative dance classes have attended dance symposiums at which primitive and jazz dance techniques were taught. These various techniques have now been imparted to the students and are a defi- nite part ot the course. The usual unitorm tor these students is a Ieotard. Leotards come in variety ot styes and colors and make the class a colortul one. Various emotions and ideas are expressed through body movement, as these girls demonstrate. STANDING: D. Spinlfa, S. When a girl is a mem- ber oT a leadership class, she wears blue shorTs, whiTe blouse, and possesses a whisTle. She is encouraged To Take over The class and is oTTen called upon To demon- sTraTe aThleTic skills and exercises. She is aided in The refereeing of games by rule- books which she purchases from The Teacher. These books conTain diagrams which illus- TraTe various Technigues, and They are ac- companied by a seT of hand signals which every leader is urged To learn. A leader also musT learn The Tundamemals oT driving. home nursing, and firsT aid. She musT be versed in a Tew Tolk dances as These are TaughT To sTudenTs in The Toyer once a week. She musT be prepared To Teach a girls' gym class iT The Teacher is ill. Upon comoIeTing The leadership course a girl is assigned To a gym class by her leadership Teacher. The class as a whole receives an award aT The end of Their year of Training. This award may be an M , or an L , or a shield. The girls decide on The Type of award which They would like, and They also decide such Things as iTs color and size. These awards are worn proudly by The girls who have earned Them. Many persons believe ThaT a girl musT be a superior aThleTe To gualify Tor leadership. This is noT necessarily True, a girl musT possess aThleTic proficiency To cerTain de- gree, buT she musT also sTand for sporTs- manship. A leader is oTTen asked To referee and score aT various TournamenTs which are being given by various girls' aThleTic clubs aT MorTon. A leader is also asked To aid in The swimming pool along wiTh The girls who are lifeguards. Also a girl may parTicipaTe in The leadership program in eiTher her sophomore or iunior years. AT The P. E. demonsTraTion The leadership classes usually perform precision marching or co-ordinaTed exercises, and They are a very popular group on The program. Thus The leaders seek To puT whaT They have learned To good use Through Their work in The P. E. de- parTmenT, and Their demonsTraTions aT The P. E. Show.
