The MusTangs coasTed on To a win during The TTnal guarTer of play afTer hiTTing six baskeTs in The closing Two minuTes of The fTrsT half and Taking a solid 30-2T lead. ThornTon's superior heighT and a TighT zone defense was a sTumbling block for The varsiTy cagers as They suf- fered Their TTrsT loss of The season 67-59. AgainsT MorTon's perennial rival, The Oak Park Huskies, The lVlusTangs compiled a 38-T9 halfTime lead, only To be defeaTed 72-65 by a sensaTional 32 poinT rally in The Third guarTer. AlThough falling in Their Suburban League opener, Coach J. Vopicka found a sTarTing cenTer in 6-11 sophomore Larry Mack, who was The game's high scorer wiTh 29 poinTs. In a losing cause againsT a hoT JolieT CaTholic quinTeT, The MusTangs displayed one of Their besT efforTs of The season, alThough losing 73-60. Eddie MaTusak's 20 poinTs iusT weren'T enough againsT The Torrid .5118 shooTing per- cenTage of The HiIIToppers. New Trier downed MorTon 711-70, hiTTing 40 ouT of 48 Tree Throws. This was The decisive facTor in lVlorTon's fourTh sTraighT loss, for The MusTangs ouTscored The Terriers 56-311 from The fToor. Snapping a four game losing sTreak, The MusTangs crushed The undefeaTed Proviso PiraTes 62-118. lVlorTon sunk half Their shoTs from The fToor, while Rick Tomek Took scoring honors wiTh 27 poinTs. The MusTangs evened Their Suburban League record aT 2-2 wiTh a comparaTively easy 66-52 Triumph over The Niles Trojans. Again senior forward Rick Tomek paced The cagers wiTh 23 poinTs. The Waukegan Bulldogs chewed MorTon's varsiTy cagers wiTh a 77-110 vicTory. MorTon gave Their worsT show- ing of The season againsT The powerful Waukegan quinTeT, who laTer wenT downsTaTe and placed fourTh. FighTing a see-saw baTTle ThroughouT The enTire game, The varsiTy TTve suffered a real hearTbreaker when Evan- sTon scored wiTh only 8 seconds remaining To eek ouT a 411-112 win. Highland Park's league sTanding improved as They beaT The MusTangs 68-56, Rick Tomek Tallying 20 pgirngl This was lVlorTon's fiTTh loss againsT Two wins iw The Suburban League. A TighT press backed up by good shooTing from The free Throw line were all The Oak Park Huskies needed T0 Take Their second win from The MusTangs This season. Failing To gain revenge, The siTy squad was edged 53-117. Avenging Their previous defeaT, The MusTangs smashed New Trier 511-28. The Terriers were anemic in Their shooTing as They sunk only seven shoTs OLTT of TTfTy. Page 237

SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL The sophomore cagers, coached by Mr. J. Capron posted an overall TO-8 record and a Suburban League mark ot 8-6, finishing in titth place. In non-conference play, the Ponies lost the opener to LaGrange 44-35. Rich Vyleta tallied eighteen points in a losing cause. The next tvvo contests were thrillers, Morton edging York 33-32, and Thornton, 38-36. In a later non-league tilt, the Ponies were toppled by Joliet Catholic, 41-32. ln Suburban League play, the sophs looked quite impressive in beating Niles, 37-31. Nile's sophs were held to only tour points in the tirst halt. Displaying a balanced scoring attack, the Ponies picked up tvvo victories as they tumbled New Trier, 48-40, and Oak Park, 42-38. In the Waukegan game, both teams displayed a deliberate type ot offense, but the Ponies were dumped, 4O-32. After bowing to Highland Park 46-43, the soph quintet whipped Evanston 32-25, with a slovv ball con- trol type ot offense. Joe Valenta led the Ponies with a seventeen point ettort in a 54-37 loss against Waukegan. Valuable experi- ence vvas gained by all those who participated on this year's team. Zvonecek pushed a jump shot past the fingertips of a leaping defender. Page 239
