The treshman diamondmen, under the leadership of Coach J. D. Capron, finished a tref mendous season with a 5AO Suburban League record, capturing the league title. The Colts vvere vvell ahead ot all opposition with a 9-2 record, both losses coming by a one run margin. Valuable experience was gained as the freshmen batted .3115 as a team, getting 110 hits in 319 chances. Their opponents were outscored 78-Al in eleven contests. Outstanding pitching performances vvere given by Ed Goralski and Larry Mack, leading the pitching statcf with A-O and 2-O records respectively. Strong hitting was evident in the .598 batting average ot Lee Heger, vvho was backed up by Sluggers John Polich, Rich Hanus, and Wayne Reznicek. Although lacking in height, the Morton Eve vvon ther second consecutive game against Proviso. Playing in top form against the Pirates, the Mustangs won 54-47. Rick Tomek scored 32 points in a 60-56 victory over Niles. Despite the closeness ot the Hnal score, the Mus- tangs won easily after leading almost the entire game. Rallying in the fourth quarter only to tall short ot a tie by five points, the Mustangs then were defeated as Waukegan stalled and vvon by the Hnal score ot 76-59. The varsity cagers were iust-outplayed by the Suburban League Champions. Morton's eighth defeat ot the season came at the hands ot the Evanston Wildkits. Superb defensive play held the Mustang scoring punch dovvn to 38 points as Evanston tallied 45. Highland Park came through vvith a 20 toot jump shot in double overtime to tinish Morton's Suburban League play on a note ot defeat. This tinal Suburban League contest was one of the most thrilling ot the season. The defeat left Morton vvith a final Suburban League record ot 5-9 and set Coach Jim Vopicka's squad into the regional tour- nament vvith an overall 7-ll mark. Reavis vvas no match for the Morton tive, as the Mustangs took an easy 56-38 vvin in first regional game. Al Jurkus played his best game of the season, scoring 20 points. In the second game ot the regional tournament, the Mustangs used a pressing defense and controlled the back- boards, breezing past Argo 62-44. Morton was knocked out ot tournament play in the regional final by the tall Hinsdale Red Devils. Although badly outshot, the Mustangs put up a terrific tight in losing 54-49. Page 236
