Considered by many to be state champions because of no downstate competition, Mortons soccer team this year had a spectacular 7-O-l record. Paced by the scoring talents of Walter Hirsekorn, Victor Palciauskas, and John Zukawskas, the booters easily defeated Elmwood Park and the University ot Chicago High School by scores ot ll-O, 7-O, 6-l, and 7-O. The true test ot strength came in the three contests against the rugged Oak Park team when the Morton soc- cermen proved themselves as champions by tying the first game 2-2 and proceeding to win the next two 6-2 and 3-2 respectively. Walter Hirsekorn scored most ot the points this season with an impressive total ot 27. This broke an individ- ual scoring record ot 20 points set twenty-one years ago. Coach Jahelka has a right to be proud of his 58-59 soccer team. Page 230

Although with outstanding hurdlers Mike Piotroski and Bob Prawdzik, and tremen- dous sprinters Larry Stepenski and Rich Tomek, the Mustangs tailed to turn in a winning season due to the great amount ot competition in the league. New Trier, Oak Park, and Evanston all finished ahead of Morton and were ranked among the tirst five in the state. Ot the three qualitiers sent downstate, Mike Piotrowski came up with the only creditable performance placing tourth in the low hurdles. Prospects tor next year are said to be good with a new held house and strong sophomore talent graduating to varsity standing. N X fssswac wMQN..,,hm K . A iv S ' S ., - -XX 'S ,QS- N Rl Q63- . .A A-.
