Morton .... .... 19 Highland Park l7 Oak Park eason glorious cy The superb defensive play of John Kratchovil and the outstanding offensive ground gains of Bob Reese made the Highland Park homecoming a day of defeat for the Parkers, as they were trounced l9-6 by the smooth-run- ning Mustangs. Ending the season in good form, the varsity humbled the secand place Oak Park eleven 17-7. Worthy of men- tion was Buddy Williams, who kicked both points after touchdowns, scored the final touchdown, and kicked the only field goal in the Suburban League. Seniors Denny Wallon, Ron Riehel, .lim Teiek, and Bob Prawzek should be given praise for their dependable performances. Without them in the backfield, Morton's offensive tactics could have underwent a drastic change . for the worse. Prospects for next season look good with outstanding lettermen returning to the squad. Realizing their Tremendous potential and gaining confidence in their ability, the Mustangs upset predictions and racked up victories in the last two games of the season. This strong finish revealed the true quality of the fighting Mustangs whose prevalent competitive spirit never faded through the dark moments of previous struggles. ln the opening game of the season, the Mustangs were defeated by the powerful Austin varsity which went on to win the City Championship. No humiliation was suffered from the 31-13 loss. The Mustangs were edged 14-13 by Waukegan in their first Suburban League game. A failure to convert for the extra point and two Waukegan interceptions led to the ultimate defeat. ln the next game, a well coordinated Proviso backfield was the decisive factor in the Pirates 21-13 win. A re- called touchdown in the third quarter also played an important part in Morton's downfall. Against New Trier, Morton suffered its fourth loss of the season, succumbing to a three touchdown rally in the last quarter of play. This made the final score 25-13 favoring the Indians. A steel tight defense, reinforced by the keyed up homecoming atmosphere which prevailed, were the main reasons why the Mustangs held the powerful Evanston Wildkits to a 7-7 tie. Supplying the heroics were George Novak, Joe Albanese, and Art Siml. Page 224 f
