THESPIANS . . .The name tor this organization has a very inter- esting and historic background. lt seems that a man by the name ot Thespis who lived in Greece about 508 B.C. Organized the tirst actor's society. He was a great poet and is considered as the inventor ot the tragedy. The National Thespians today are composed of students who have proved their abilities and talents in dramatics activities. Candidates are chosen tor mem- bership by a system based on the individual's participation in active drama and backstage work. The many hours ot rehearsal which were spent by these people were well rewarded by the high ratings which the contest play received. Mr. Teeter is advisor to this histrionic group. The main obiective ot the Masque and Gavel Society is to promote improved and better speech at home, school, and in society. To be accepted into this organization, students must main- tain a minimum average ot eighty- tive and have acquired the essential traits ot a good leader, A student having accomplished this goal and willing to become a member ot the organization must declare hs candi- dacy within the tirst tevv months ot the school year. QUILL AND SCROLL The lnternational Honorary Society tor High School Journalists, more commonly called Quill and Scroll, is an organization dedicated toward the advancement ot high school journalism. Eligibility is limited to juniors and seniors who are in the upper third ot their class and have done superior work in some phase ot creative writing or expository writing. Last year they had a banquet in which approximately twelve students were initiated. Three ot these students are now seniors. The three high school students were: Judi Bryan. Dolores Pochocki, and Chester Laskovvski. Q

Dates tor assemblies and programs must be approved by the Assembly Committee. They must approve all skits and material that vvill be presented to the students through assemblies. These assemblies are intended for the enioy- ment and enlightenment of the student body. One assembly which vvas held in January dealt vvith the experiences ot a man who had lived in a Communist-occupied country. The Activity Committee is in charge ot all Homecoming activities except the dance. It organizes, plans, and directs all Homecoming activities for the school and the community including the parade, nomination and election ot queens, and its annual rah-rah sale. They vvork along vvith the Social Committee on the crovvning ot the queens. This committee puts on pep assemblies and other school activities assigned to it. Last year vve had one ot the largest Homecoming parades Morton has ever had. The vvhole Homecoming more than proved to be a success. ' usic Plareciafion The name ot this organization is Modern Music Masters, Society tor Junior and Senior High School Musicians. There are tTve classes ot membership. They are: Apprentice, Active, Faculty, Alumni, and Honor- ary. These students provide wider and greater opportunities for per- sonal musical expression in schools, churches, and civic and social serv- ice clubs in our community. In order to become a member ot this organization, one must have at least one interest in either ot the following: Band, Orchestral and Choral performance, ensemble, or in solo work. It tries to increase and toster the spirit ot good music and musical knowledge to turther the reputation of our school as a music center. Masque and Gavel is a national speech honor society for those outstanding in the various phases ot speaking. Students are selected on the basis of their ability.
