The students eniox working with the theorems and tormulas which provide them with a great deal ot mental exercise. lt is a tact that such mental gxm- OSSTICS help a person to become a quick thinker. The members find a real challenge in an unsolved problem and cannot rest until it is solved. The main ex ent ot the Math Club is the prepara- tion tor participation in the nation-wide math contest, This test is very ditticult and requires a great deal ot stqdx. The students are given a great deal ot eniovment along with education be- cause ot the excellence with which their adxisor, Mr, Cherrx teaches them. rom 4.jWcqAf fo n1gAf ASTRONOMY CLUB . . . The Astronomy Club members show great enthusiasm in exploring the heavens. They spend many evenings scanning the skies with the eight-inch reflector telescope. The members study the stars and planets, knowing that in the not too distant future that will be the direction of travel. Since man is such an adventurous creature, there will undoubtedly come a time when he will not be able to resist going out to see what lies in that great space, and the Astronomy trontiersmen will be our new pioneers. Trips to the Planetarium and various other Observatories in the Chicago area are made, and lectures by the members and sponsors are given. Slides and tilms also give the members of the club an en- ioyable and enlightenfng time. The grinding of new mirrors and other phases ot work is under the direction ot Mr. W. J. You can win this game in three moves, is a common expres- sion during a session of the Chess and Checkers Club. On- lookers prophesy the outcome ot the game and analyze each move made to see it they can discover the reasoning behind it. The less skilled players watch as the experts play in tense silence. The members pre- pare themselves tor the inter- scholastic Chess Tournament by engaging each other in many games. They accept each other's suggestions tor improvement and try to practice them. They are then prepared to meet the opposing players from other schools. An example ot these interscholastic meets is the one with Evanston in which our Morton team was the victor. 'Q' a
