The Theory section of the music de- partment comprises three courses, namely, musical theory, harmony, and history of music. Musical theory is a beginner's course in which the fundamentals of music Writing are taught. Here the various parts which make up a composition such as scales, intervals, and simple chords are studied. Each member of the class is encouraged to Write some original Work for his particular instru- ment. At the end of the year each stu- dent has opportunity to make a public appearance, playing his own original composition. Harmony, an advanced course in theory, is 'open to those Who have had theory or anyone Who has had piano keyboard experience. Here harmoni- zation of given bases and melodies is the main subject of study. The original compositions Written by the students in the harmony class are of a more ad- vanced nature than those written by the theory students. MUSIC HISTORY THEORY HARMONY R. S. Lundgren, Instructor Both of these courses are very bene- ficial to the musician as they help him to understand and interpret his music. This is true more particularly of those who make public appearances every spring in district, state, and national contests. History of music is a study of the de- velopment of music and musical in- struments from early times up to the present day. ln connection with this subject a course in music appreciation is taught. This course follows that of the NBC Music Appreciation Hour con- ducted by Walter Damrosch. By means of a radio the students are able to hear compositions such as they themselves play and study about played and in- terpreted by the NBC Symphony Or- chestra. Students also have a guide book to those programs which gives further explanation concerning the mu- sic which is played.
