The Morton Orchestra has progressed in great strides since its beginning in 1997. Although there are no accurate records of its activity at that time, we know that at first there was a very limi- ted instrumentationr-Violins, cornets, piano, drums, and a few others. By the early 1920's the orchestra had grown to include between forty and fif- ty players with all instruments repre- sented. Morton's first experience in music contests was in 1925 when, under Mr. Nicholas's direction, our group en- tered a contest with Chicago and sub- urban schools, and was awarded sec- ond place. Since 1933 the Morton Orchestra has entered three state contests. ln May, 1933, Morton was host to the lllinois State Orchestra contest and placed sec- ond in it. ln 1934 Morton took first place at the state contest held at the Ioliet High School. A lack of funds pre- vented Morton fro mattending thevna- tional contest that year. ln 1935 the orchestra won the state contest and placed second in the national contest held at Madison, Wisconsin. Lately the membership has grown to 85 players. There is full symphonic in- The Senior Orchestra Director, C. H. Hcrbermcm strumentation including English horns, bass clarinet, and a full French horn sections, which are lacking in many high school orchestras. The repertoire has included many of the standard symphonies, overtures, and suites. lt is believed that through the direct con- tact of playing the great music of the masters, the highest type of apprecia- tion is developed.
