Seniors We cannot say, and We will not say That they are dead. They are just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, They have wandered into an unknown land And left us dreaming how very fair lt needs must be, since they linger there And you-oh, you, who the wildest yearn F or an old-time step, and the glad return, Think of them faring on, as dear ln the love of There as the love of Here. Think ot them still as the same. We say, They are not dead,-they are just away. lames Whitcomb Riley. The Concert Band Director, L. M. Blaha The Morton Concert Band has brought many distinctive honors to the school in the field of music. Since 1931 the band has been rated in the first division by the outstanding judges of music in every contest in which it has partici- pated. This community enjoyed the opportunity of welcoming home a Na- tional Championship Band in the years of 1931, 1933, and 1936. A membership of one hundred and twenty players representing every sec- tion of the school district comprises the Morton Concert Band of 1936-1937. This exceeds all past records in the school's history. An even more remarkable re- cord was achieved in the increased re- quirements for membership in the band. A preliminary training of three years or more is required and many of the seniors of the band have had eight or nine years of training. When performing before the public, the uniforms and the instrumental equipment of the band represent an in- vestment of 325,009 A very complete instrumentation is maintained, assur- ing tonal effects found only among the world's finest bands. The facilities of the Music Depart- ment with its fine rehearsal room leave little to be desired in improvement. One of the most essential factors in the rapid and successful development of the band is its very fine library. Its files contain many selections of every musical form representing most of the great com- posers in musical history. The training of the young musicians in the band is based upon the most scientific and up-to-date methods and ideas obtainable. lt is carried out in two separate procedures, the purely technical and the artistic form. The results of this training are applied to a long list of varied activities found with- in the school and the community, in- cluding the participation in contests and the presentation of concerts. The accomplishments of the Morton Concert Band are known to be the high- est among high schools throughout the land.
