The two senior attendants were Miss Claudia Cummings and Miss Michelle Boyd. The Junior Maid was Miss Janic:e Washington. Butler put the first points on the board during the first quarter. The Jags were unable to score throughout the first half, but their defense held Butler hack from another score. The Rebels led 7-Oat the half. Johnson returned to tin field with new determination. On their second possession, Felix Hargrove carried the ball into the end zone. The extra point attempt was no good. The score: Rebs 7, Jags 6. The next several plays were all defensive. Neither team’s offense gained over 2 yards rushing. Butler got the hall with 4 minutes and 28 seconds left in the game. After gaining 7 yards, the Rebels fumbled the hall to Johnson s Chris Martin. Tim Huggins plunged through the Butler defense on the next play for the winning touchdown. The two point conversion attempt failed, hut Johnson had their victory with the score 12- 7. 32 cJ-fot TOP PICTURE. FIRST ROW: Roland Clark. SECOND ROW . Johnson vs. Lee It can almost he said that history repeats itself — Almost. Johnson and Lee fought it out for four quarters, and at the end of the regulation time the score was Johnson 7. Lee 7. Recalling last year’s frustrating 0 0 score. Coach Childress of Lee had decided before the beginning of the game to go into overtime in case of a tie. He couldn’t have known the effect his decision would make. The Jags fumbled the ball on their own 8-yard-line in the first quarter, which led to Lee's sole touchdown. Then, in the seontl quarter, Lee fumbled the hall. Chris Marlin recovered it. Thirty-four yards late r, Johnson scored to tie the game at 7 7. The second half of the game was uneventful and frustrating for both teams. Neither could penetrate further than a few yards into opposing territory. As the clock ran out, the score was maintained at 7 7. The atmosphere as overtime began was unbearable. With l oth teams under pressure from their fans, their coaches, and themselves, the first drive got underway. Johnson scored on the third down, and the successful PAT made the score 14-7. The Generals then look possession of the ball. A pass into the end zone deflected off of the intended receiver's fingertips, and landed in the waiting hands of Jaguar Kevin Cassady. This play ended the game, leaving the Jags with a hard-earned 14-7 victory. 33 TOP PICTI. RF,. F I RSI ROW . LEFT TO RIGHT: Sian Severs. Mike Williams, Michael Powell. Mar in Thomas. Oliver Johnson was born in 1910 To Arthur and Kate Johnson. He grew up in the Monrov ia area and graduated from Madison County’s first rural high school. During his college career he held a variety of jobs, including driving a school bus and a tractor. He finished his formal education and was ordained a Baptist minister in 1930. In 1938 he became a basketball coach at West Huntsville High School. There he met and married Ruth Hartford, an English teacher. They had three children: James, Anne, and Beth. John's military career spanned thirty-one years, from 1936 to 1967. During that time he rose from the rank of private to brigadier general. After his retirement, he continued to assume leadership roles in several military organizations. He also held important positions in community, educational, and church organizations. He was general manager of G. W. Jones Sons at the time of his death in 1969. While a member of the school board, he coordinated efforts to secure land for the new northwest Huntsville school. He shared many good ideas for the new school. This resulted in the school being named J. Oliver Johnson High School. 253 't7S-’rjg: !3t cWa± a Q ery (ff ood Tjear Thorne!' — a familiar tound throughout the halit of Cjohnton during tfu patt gear.
