J-lfESENTEDBY THE SENIOR CLASS OF iATE HIGH SCHOOL '-GONZALE7, FLORIDA FOREWORD As the centuries have passed, the Ancient Roman’s philosophy of life has been preserved in the minds of men. Even the government, ed- ucation, and architecture of those times have stood, combating her foes, nature and man. Records of this great civilization have been handed down to us in this present time in the form of books. We, the students of Tate, have here recorded the activities in which we have taken part to be handed down in much the same way. Thus we have chosen “Ancient Rome” as the theme for the 56 Tahisco record of our high school days. S. W. We, the Seniors of Tate High School, would like to express our appreciation to one who has helped and advised us through our years at Tate; who has served the students of our school faithfully for the last nine years; and who will long be remem- bered for the kindness and affection which she has shown boys and girls of this community. Proudly, we dedicate this 1956 TAHISCO to Mrs. Irma York. R. R. 3 CONTENTS SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN JUNIOR HIGH FACULTY ORGANIZATIONS ACTIVITIES SPORTS ADVERTISING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I have been principal of five schools over a period of thirty- one years. I have never been happier in a new situation than I am at Tate. A good county system, a fine school community, an excellent faculty, and a super student body have engendered this feeling. No school group in any section of our great nation has greater potentials than our group at Tate. The heights of achievement that Tate reaches will depend upon how these potentials are uti- lized and developed. It is my most sincere desire that each of us exert the effort necessary for the realization of the maximum ac- complishment that be ours collectively and individually. I pledge all my strength and effort toward making Tate School the best school in the land. J. Donald Cates 5 SCHOOL______________ ADMINISTRATION SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL J. DONALD CATES M. A., University of Florida HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL JOHN ED CHRISTIAN M. S. , Auburn ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL EARL CRAFT B. S., Jacksonville State SENIORS PATRICIANS As we pause today and look back upon the experiences of our high school years with their pleasures, duties, and many friends, we can have only feelings of sadness at the thought of parting and of pride in our accomplishments. We have chosen for our class flower, the Yellow Rose, which re- presents the pleasant memories of our friendships; our class colors. Yellow and White, that stand out brightly for our glowing futures; and our chosen motto, “A man's reach should exceed his grasp, that should strengthen our characters and shape our destinies. 8 CAROLYN NELSON ANNE BREWTON . But Coach Ralph Chaudron’s courageous Tate Aggies proved it pos- sible Tuesday night by coming from deep in the woods to overcome to the proud Pensacolians, 71-70 in a thrill-packed over-packed spectacle at the Gonzalez gym. An overflow crowd kept in TATE BEATS PENSACOLA a frenzy from midway in the fourth period until the final buzzer ended the overtime. Many felt it was the most ex- citing finish ever witnessed in local cage circles with both teams giving their greatest effort. . It marked the first time in his- tory that Tate has edged the Ben- gals. They have been competing on-and-off since the 30’s. The Aggies could not have pulled through without the supreme ef- fort given by Wilbur Luker, a lithe, six-foot, one-inch sharp- shooter, who pumped in 32 points. Luker “took charge” and carried his teammates just when it ap- peared they were about to sag. In fact, it was his bucket, made with just two seconds left on the clock, that sent the game into overtime. Tate jumped into a quick M) lead, but lost the spark that car- ried them and watched Pensaco- la take over and blast out a 22-10 first period advantage. The Aggies hit the doldrums during the opening part of the second stanza. In fact, the period w8s about five minutes old before they added another point, and trailed at this stage, 31-10. But they found the range and began to hit. Coach Chaudron apparently oiled their joints during halftime, for when the Aggies took the court after intermission, they were hum- ming on all cylinders. With about five minutes and 30 seconds left in thq game, Tate tied the score and from that point on, it was a battle royal.. After the lead changed hands three times in the final minute, Pensacola took a 67-65 advantage with just seven seconds remain- ing. Luker followed by quickly dribbing downcourt, and fired from about 20 feet out. The ball swished through the cords with two seconds left and the game was packaged for the overtime tilt. Stover Mcllwain got a Tate basket and Dickie Arnold contrib- uted two free throws in the over time to give the Aggies a 4-3 ad- vantage with 31 seconds left in the extra stanza. The Aggies stalled and held on until the final gun. John Stanhagen and Belich were the big guns for the Bengals, who now boast a 2-6 record, their worst in Shorty Sneed’s 10-year coaching regime. Both boys con- tributed 18 points. Belich hit only one field goal but pumped through 16 of 17 tries from the free throw line. Behind Luker in Tate’s scoring ben was Mcllwain who hit 21. Fel- ton Ard, who spelled Leslie Hines most of the way when Hines fouled his way out of action, cracked for only eight points, but helped tre- mendously with his rebounding. The big forward raked the boards clean during the fourth period to help Tate get underway. The Aggies now boast a 14-2 mark for the session. They lost to Choctawhatchee in their opener, and then dropped one to Catholic last week. It is the com- mencement of new forest growth, a promise of a permanent supply of pulpwood. A sustained forest growth provides income forthe Tree Farmer, and steady, well paid jobs to the thousands of employees at St. Regis Kraft Center. It is a good place to work for those who look ahead, because it is backed by the greatest natural resource in the South - our pine forests. Many graduates of Tate High School are now working at St. Regis Kraft Center, or are supplying pulpwood to the mill. © ST.
