DEDICATION It is with a most sincere appreciation for the part you have had in our education at Tate and for the inspiration you have given us to acquire the necessary knowledge to achieve our goals; to re- alize our ambitions; and to live up to our ideals of good character so necessary if we are to make the most of ourselves and our sur- roundings---And because we know that as long as you continue to teach, your classes will receive these same wonderful contribu- tions, we the Senior Class dedicate this 1955 Tahisco to you, Miss Josephine Street. In the pages of this book, the I 95 5 Annual Staff has recorded the happy and memorable days of the big year in the lives of this year’s Senior Class. The features and drawings contained herein carry out a well chosen theme which was one time typical of this section of our country. As you, the students and the faculty, delve through this book, may your enjoyment in reading and looking be just as great as ours was in working on it. « 'J0 PRINCIPAL’S MES84GE The J. M. Tate School Community is rapidly advancing and we are keeping pace. Our school is continuing to grow in population and we are adjusting our curriculum to meet the needs of our students. These changes have come rapidly during the past few years but you have met them with a spirit that is a part of Tate. This spirit has prevailed throughout the school and has made you acceptable as a school wherever you come in contact with the public. This is a tribute to you as students and to the for- mer administrators who helped to implant this loyalty to Tate. My fervent wish is that you may take with you from Tate the lessons that you have learned and that you will utilize the knowledge that you have gained and become useful, happy citizens. I know that your TAHISCO will be a constant reminder of the dreams of youth and this will be an incentive for you to ever move forward. SIDNEY W. Kirby Brown, Clayton Peacock, Edward Stacey, Douglas Mason, Gene Jordan, Raymond Corley, Elizabeth Huelsbeck, Eloise Adams, Phoebe Ashley, Raymond McElhaney uuyof I PROPHECY We are looking into the future, year 1999, several years after the Old South has risen again. Rex Tidwell, John Batchelor, and Kirby Brown are now the joint owners of the Magnolia plantation, the largest in the South. The Magnolia Plantation is located on the banks of the Escambia River. If you should happen to visit, and take a tour of the plantation you would find Don Mayo acting as stable boy (the very best in the South). As you enter the Big House the butler, Lewis Bond, would greet you and immediately take you to the parlor where you would find Floyd McLeod, Lamar Brock, and Ervin Brantly discussing business 1 concerning the plantation. The head cook is Myrtle Lingo with Phebe Ashley, Patty Tidwell, Eloise Adams, Jo Ann Zodun, and Mary Soday assisting. As you leave the Big House you would see Neta Clark, Donna Gamble, Betty Joyce Brackin, Barbara Nichols, Marie Olson, and Edna Webb doing the weekly laundry. Outside, under the large moss-covered trees sit the wives of the three plantation owners, Paula Helton, Martha Fant, and Nancy Massengale sipping tea. On the lawn might be some of their relatives, Lettie Caraway, Wanda Taylor, Charles Garrett, and Jackie White playing croquet. You might get into a carriage driven by Gene Dudley, and most likely Jimmy Wat- son, a cotton picker's son, would be playing with a rattle snake or something just as daring. — Then you would come to the cotton fields where the cotton pickers, Gene Jordan, Lynn Couch, David Morgan Danny Morton, Harry Pent on, David Turner, Burley White, Raymond McElhaney, and Dean Jordan—Their wives, Mollie Sandiford, Jean Tisdale, Voncile Scott, Violata Renfroe, Shirley Gay, Doris Lansdon, Norma Kast, Elwanda Marty, and Catherine Thompson. Their foreman is Frank Willis.- Once a day they join Joe Creighton, Bobby Enfinger, Norman Foster, Fred Gaines, Frances Gulsby, Gerry Howell, and Jo-Ann Ivey at the cane break where they are met by Jane Nowak, Joyce Moody, Joyce Manning, W. L. Bray, James Cannon, Jerry Campbell, Joe Nall and Ray Nicholson, from an adjoining plantation, and sing a few of the South’s old folk songs. They are usually led by Edward Stacey. You would most likely be held up by the cotton wagons on their way to the gotton gin. Approaching the cotton gin you might see Levon Hicks, Charles Hilburn, Joan Knowles, Joyce Kirksey, Elizabeth Huelsbeck, Clayton Peacock, Larry Powell, and Austin Singleton unloading the wagons. If you enter the cotton gin you will see Jeff Foster, Alton Grimes, and James Beal doing the hardest labor: while in the back Rufus Campbell, Betty Welch, James Christie, Mary Jean Yerg, and Mildred Vaughn taking inventory of the number of bales. Howard Lewis, the manager of the gin, could introduce you to his three assistants, Shirley Penton, Betty Chance, and Marjorie Raines. Next you go outside and find Carl Whitson, David Johnson, Farrell McCrory and Raymond Corley loading the baled cotton on the truck; while the truck drivers, Dilford Robinson, Robert Smith, Frank Cummings and Cleveland Nall are enjoying a last cup of coffee. On your way back to the Big House we see more of the help, Douglas Mason, Mary Jean Guelsby, Geraldine Wilson, Ernest Thompson, Martha Jean Hinote, Warren Jernigan, Robert Rutherford, and Arlis Stevenson returning after a hard days work. Now that you have made the grand tour you return to the Big House for a final display of Southern Hospitality. SENIOR DLXIEKATS The Senior Section has long since been in the mail and now we Seniors find that we have several most important items that must not be left out of this our book of rinal “school day memories.” We think it only fitting and proper that the activity section begin with these Senior “Number One Items’ and so we give you: Our class motto, colors, and flower; our newest senior, Eugene Williamson, who came back home to graduate all the way from Japan; a picture of the two buildings in which most of us have spent the larger part of this final year at Tate; our number one high school substitute teacher, Mrs. Coleman, who has been “Mrs. Huggins”, “Miss Street”, “Mrs. Dickson”, or “Miss Davis” to most of us; our Coronation monarch, “Frank R. Wil- lis”, and last, but far from least, Tate’s own “Dixie- kats”, who have done much to liven things up in our assemblies this year. The rest of our ac- tivity section speaks for itself, so turn the pages and “listen” with your eyes. 126 CLASS FLOWER - White Carnation MRS. Leaders tomorrow Science Building and the Main Building Senior Office Girls CLASSES (URLS’ HOME ECONOMICS Home Economics is taught by Mrs. Martha Dickson and Mrs, Kath- leen Jennings, Girls can take Home Ec, three years. One semester during the year the girls cook for special occasions like buffet luncheons, Christ- mas, and Thanksgiving dinners. The other semester the girls sew, study childcare and housekeeping. This class has proved to be very helpful in a girls everyday life. In this class, the boys take part in a well-rounded program of home- making. During the first semester, they study and attempt to practice better grooming habits including how to dress properly for different occasions. They also leam how to make wise clothing selections. In the second semester, they discuss foods and nutrition. From there, they plan, build, and furnish a house. This course is very practical and will be useful in the very- day life of the boys. BOYS’ HOME ECONOMICS CHEMISTRY Tate is and has been for four years giving future Chemists of Dixie opportunity to further their knowledge in Advanced Chemistry. The Science Department is keeping step with the South’s new and growing industries. For example our own local St. Regis Company and Chemstrand Corporation. Biology is a required subject for all high school students. Since all students must take this course to graduate the classes are usually very large. In this class the student takes up the study of all plants and animals. But more important is the study of human body, and the mind, and how they work. It holds the secret of body health, of mental happiness, and of useful citizenship. This is an important class to those who plan to be secretaries. They learn the right way to type invoices, letters, telegrams, etc. They also learn to be accurate and to type at a constant speed. These are the most important things in making good secretaries. CUSSES TYPING One of the more popular classes at Tate is the Art Class. In this class the students get a basic idea of art and the great artists of our time. They are permitted to use a number of different media to determine which material is best suited to them and their particular technique of drawing and painting. GIRLS’ PHYSICAL EDUCATION There are six classes of girl's physical education this year. The high school girls are under the direction of Miss Moore - Miss Goodman teaches the junior high girls. The high school girls play volley ball and have intermural tournaments. The younger girls play softball. Physical Ed. classes teach the girls proper health habits, the rules and fundamentals of many games, and also the importance of team spirit and good sportsmanship. BOYS’ PHYSICAL EDUCATION The boys physical education classes are taught six full periods of the day. The instructors are: Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Chaudron. The instructors hold classes in learning the rules and fundamentals of various games. The two main sports played by these classes are softball and touch football. Each class is divided into two sections, the junior section and the senior section. CUSSES SHOP The Shop classes are taught five periods out of six, each day. These classes vary in number from thirty to forty boys per class. The boys are taught, by Mr. England, to handle tools and various methods of oper- ating machines. Oral discussions are the highlight of the Psychology class. Miss Street and her Psychology students discuss each chapter of their book, and any partic- ular subject that arises during class time. One of the required classes taught at Tate is the Civics Class. In this course, the freshmen learn of our government, the laws, customs and rules of our country, and the basic political operation of our nation. The Agriculture Class is for the boys interested in Ag. to learn the business side of farming. They learn how and when to plant crops, and they learn to figure lumber to build houses. They have a very interesting class three times a week in the class room and meet twice outside putting their knowledge to work. The instructors, Mr. Sublette and Mr. Farish, are very skilled in this subject. itimumi VOCATIONAL SCHOOL BOYS Among the various classes offered here at Tate, a group of courses have been offered at the Pensacola Vocational School. In this school students are taught courses in electricity, auto mechanics, diesel mechanics, machine shop, and radio. These classes are set up to simulate industry as near as possible. This is so the stu- dents will be prepared to meet the needs of the World of Industry. Arnold Lovine at the Lathe Coaches sign three year contract. Whoa Lizziel Hard at it. s n a P S h o t s Happy ? The entertainment was provided by the Dixie Kats, the Glee Club, Dot Fate, Janie Hampton, and the band. At the conclusion of the program, the court left the stage to reign over the carnival activities. The carnival booths were set up and operated by the different grades and a number of school organi- zations. It is the com- mencement of new forest growth, a promise of a permanent supply of pulp- wood. A sustained forest growth provides income for the Tree Farmer, and steady, well paid jobs to the thousands of employees at St. Regis Kraft Center. It is a good place to work for those who look ahead, because it is backed by the greatest natural resource in the South - our pine forests. Many graduates of Tate High School are now working at St. Regis Kraft Center, or are supplying pulpwood to the mill. ST.
