Our environment is becoming more and more industrialized and we can feel its effect upon our daily lives. It is our hope that this edition of the TAHISCO will keep alive our fond memories of Tate. Foreword Vs cm. - PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our community is rapidly changing from an agricultural to an industrial area. Since most of us will spend the major portion of our lives here we must make corresponding changes, particularly in our educational processes. The greatest opportunities for us and our community lie in the direction of individual improvement, self discipline, and a determination to carry on a program of self education. Self-education as a perpetual process keeps alive the forces of the mind, gives us new knowledge, and expands our capaci ties to the extent that we are able to contribute worthily in a changing economy. R.C. LIPSCOMB DEDICATION In every rank, or great or small, 'Tls industry Supports us all —John Gay Over a million high school students enter industry each year for life work. Industry gives great laboratories and research centers which are constantly at work all over America seeking new and improved devices and processes that will benefit humanity. The wealth of our nation lies in in- dustry developed in our democratic system of free enterprise. It is only in a democracy that the fruits of industry can be justly divided among all those who have labored to produce them and those for whom they have been produced. May we, in whatever scope we serve, seek to continue the march of science and industry at the steady and rapid rate our predecessors have established. As Seniors coming to the close of our high school careers and to the threshold of the broader responsibilities of the future, it is our pleasure to dedicate the 1953 TAHISCO to MISS GRACE ARNOLD, a sincere and devoted leader, who has unselfishly and unsparingly given her time and effort to the cause of education. During her ten years of service at Tate she has enriched the life of our School Community through sponsoring many plays, the Annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and the Junior Class. She has inspired pupils to win awards in speech and writing. She has sincerely and conscientiously helped us to develop our individual personalities. She has received State-wide recognition as Secretary of the State Council of English Teachers. It is said that a teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops. In dedicating this annual to Miss Arnold, it is our purpose to express our feeling of gratitude and appreciation for her in- fluence on our lives. What greater or better gift can we offer the republic than to teach and instruct our youth? —Cicero TATE HIGH SCHOOL UEt USSiHGH 50 VG To TflTE OF THB £R RS QanIE J VIHE H r B WEft£ ,N HUH5 np cjhssP6msy u !jp£ ? f rii r r T r 1 r ifiDBS - f )£ U L T Q Cl fissw'h TBS, FfifcrtJ)S Cf)M)PL S SF fiDBS SO TtiUB, Mf yVRiEOE ff EftiR wE'H. Principal B. S. Birmingham Southern College M. A. University of Florida The eyes of industry are focused on these fine members of the Senior Class, who have been selected as trustworthy students. Industry is constantly becoming more technical and as a result of these changes, a greater demand is being placed on the workers of industry to comprehend and intelli- gently control the involved machinery and processes. They strongly urge that the schools encourage students to complete their basic high school training, and speak authorita- tively that the completion of such training is a requirement for the youngman or woman who desires to start at the bottom and earn his or her way to a fine trade or vocation. Homemaking is a vital and interesting study. Not only does it prepare a girl for a happy marriage, but it fits her for a happy, well-adjusted life in her community and her occupation. Homemaking is not all sewing and cooking, but a class where a girl receives help in order to prepare herself for the industrial world. Homemaking aids a girl in learning to get along with others, in being sure of herself by teaching her to take care of herself so that she is well-groomed at all times. Girls are taught that poise and assur- ance count in the business world as well as a knowledge of typing or business law. x X Our greatest wealth is not in mines, Or river-bottom land, or factories. The Club was founded in 1933 in South Carolina and in August 1936 it was chartered in the same state as a non-profit club. The Beta Club was founded to stimulate effort, reward achievement, and to encourage and assist its members to continue their education after high school graduation. The qualifications for individual membership in the National Beta Club are (a) good mentality and character, (b) creditable achievements, and (c) commendable attitude. Prospective members must be approved by the head of the local school. The Beta Club in our own school has been organized for about eleven years, during which time the club has been represented at the State Convention nearly every year. Our club won a five dollar prize at the State Convention in 1951 and won the trophy for the best one-act play in 1947. In 1950 Donald Mayne was elected State Beta Club President. The Beta Club takes an active part in school activities and has always been recognized for its high stand- ards. For five years Miss Jo Street has been sponsor, and the club has a fine organization with a membership of approximately thirty two. The senior class and faculty select the girl to represent the individual high school. The selec- tion is made on the basis of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. The winner from each high school submitted an essay entitled What Is I speak for democracy. Who am I? Iam the policeman of your block, I am the grocer at the neighbor- hood store, I am the voter who casts his ballot. I am the children pledging allegiance to the flag, I am the newspaper boy, the shoe-shine boy, the banker, the politician, the doctor, the soldier, the teacher, the student. I am black, white, yellow. My ancestors were the Indians who were here before the settling of our land, my ancestors came over on the Mayflower some have just been naturalized. I am the truth, the honor, hope, the pride of a free land. I am too proud to bow to any other country, yet I humble my- self before my God........ I am proud.. .though not too proud to beg for the life of one of my sons. Yet, when deaf ears are turned to my pleas, I am ready to fight for what is mine! Yes, my children are many, my riches great, my land the best, my resources the finest........ I will go on until the oppressed are free, the weak are strong, the poor have plenty, the unbelievers have God, the untaught learn, the mighty use their strength wisely. Yes, I shall go on......My one hundred- sixty million voices raised in thanksgiving for the gifts which God has bestowed upon us. I am the voice of America, Speaking for Democracy. IN APPRECIATION Hear the hum of streamlined autos whizzing down our highways! Hear the singing wires, the screeching rails, the tumble of industrial motors! And underneath the bustle and roar of everyday modem America, hear the steady beat, beat, beat of stout hearts and of sturdy feet upon the paths of industrial progress! Soon many of us will become a part of this great industrial advancement. As we leave our school we would like to express our appreciation to those who have made possible this edition of the Tahisco. We are deep- ly grateful to Mr. Lipscomb, the faculty, the student body, Mr. Frederickson, our pho- tographer; our publishers and advertisers for their services and cooperation.
