Fads and fashions change each year. Clothing that was fashionable last year is probably “out” this semester. New trends for 71 were fringes on purses, sleeves, jackets and skirts; headbands; body shirts; flared slacks; pant suits; and his and her jewelry. Above, Mary Frances Hogan gets it all together with an outfit that is popular with Kelly students. 10 Mini, Midi, Maxi? New school dress codes allowed Kelly girls more freedom in style of dress. Shown left are Rhonda Gilbert and Debra Carter wearing two extremes in hemlines, the midi being the least popular in Kelly’s classrooms, with the mini still the favorite. Pictured above are Danny Bailey, Joyce Terry, and Donnie Askins representing current fads in student dress. 11 Classes In Drama And Distributive Education Encourage Student Involvement Becky Harlow, Nancy Willis, and Paul Isc (opposite page) ready make-up for a seer from Pygmalion. She lives in Wise near Kelly High School with her par- ents. She comes from a family of three children, an older sister and a younger brother. Her course of study was con- centrated on business to prepare for office work as a career. Alice’s main interest in school has been sports, especially activities supporting the athletic teams. She has been a member of several clubs. She belonged to the F.H.A. for three years and served as secretary for one year; a member of the Glee Club for one year; and a member of the D.E. Club for one year, in which she also served as secretary. In her junior year, she worked with the prom committee, and she was a member of the Homecoming Court this past fall. After graduation Alice plans to marry and to work in an office. How does she feel about being chosen Miss KHS? “Surprised and happy”! Mr. Kelly High Anthony Scott Anthony Scott lives at West Norton with his mother. He is the youngest of a family of eleven, which consists of nine boys and two girls. He has worked in the college preparation course of study in high school. One of Tony’s main interests at Kelly has been the D.E. class in which he has spent part time working at Hatcher’s in Norton. He also enjoys working with his fellow students, especially in clubs. Tony has been elected homeroom president for the last four years, reporter for the D.E. Club, a member of the prom committee, and student-in-charge of school picture sales. He has also worked hard to raise funds for the D.E. Club. When he was asked what he liked best at Kelly, Tony said he appreciated the good friends he had made here, and that he got along well with all the teachers. He especially enjoyed Mrs. Dingus’s junior homeroom. Tony plans to attend C.V.C., major in business, and work toward a career in the business world after college. The group met this year on Tuesday and Thurs- day each week and presented two programs: a Christmas canta- ta-pageant and a spring concert. During Christmas vacation, choir members went caroling in the town of Wise. The J. J. Kelly High School Chorus entered choral try-outs in Bristol for the first time this year. The purpose of these try-outs was to select a regional chorus to perform at Carrol County High School in Hillsville in February. Selections for a state- wide chorus are made at the regional choral festival. From the nineteen members of the Kelly Chorus who tried out, eleven were selected to sing at the regional meeting. The eleven members selected were: Debbie Wells, Susan Jennings, Barbara Mann, Amy Roberson, Mike Beverly, Sutton Rigg, Noel Collins, Billy Thompson, Donnie Henry, Jimmy Baird, and Rusty Elliott. Mrs. Ralph Wells is the director of the group. Donnie Henry was selected 1970 All-Virginia Chorus in Norfolk. First row: Judy Broadwater, Jane Stephens. The SCA operated the concession stand at foot- ball games; the Hi-Y sold refreshments during bas- ketball season; the Junior National Honor Society sold flowering trees; the F.H.A. sponsored candy sales; the D.E. Club had several money raising pro- jects; the F.B.L.A. sold Tom-Wat Kits; and the Candy Stripers gave many hours of service to the hospital. Pictured right is Doug Hunsak- er, Judy Harding and Junior Honor Society members in a program. After our week’s workout we returned home for more training and finally to “strut our stuff’ at ball games, festivals, parades, and pep rallies. Under the leadership of our band director, Lucian Priode, the band, the majorettes, and the drum major worked an average of fifteen hours a week after school during the fall season. Also backing us is a fine group of hard working band boosters. They have sponsored several money-making programs such as a concession stand at the Wise County Fair and at the home football games. Their hard work has really paid off. After our year of playing for ball games, dedications, Christmas parades, and pep rallies, we found ourselves the proud winners of five trophies. Among the winnings were a first place at Chilhowie Band Festival, a “I” rating at the Bristol Music Fes- tival, a second place trophy from Cumberland, Ken- tucky Marching Festival, and a large trophy for the best field commander at the festival to drum major, Kim Boggs. Seventy-Seventy-one has been our best Season here at Kelly. The J. J. Kelly High Indians started their football season with a heartbreaking loss to the Castlewood Blue Devils, the champs in their district. In the first half, Coach Rose’s Indians looked to be one of the better teams in the LPD. After a great first half, the Indians forgot to play, and at the end of the game found themselves on the short end of the stick. For the second game, Wise traveled to Appalachia and lost another hard-fought battle. Again, the In- dians only played one half and came home losers. Then came the game with the Wildcats who were picked to be the LPD champs in pre-season ratings. That Friday night the Indians played two halves and really thrashed the highly rated Wildcats. This led to a winning trend with wins over Norton, Powell Val- ley, Clintwood, Pennington (a homecoming victory), Coeburn, and Ervinton, placing the Indians in first place. The game with Grundy was the last regular season game. On a playing field that was one big mudhole, the Indians faced the biggest team this year, and Wise lost a close game, 26-24. Wise next went to Lebanon for the first round in the Region D Playoff where they played the Castle- wood Blue Devils and advanced to the semi-finals by winning 20-14. Then the team traveled to Chilhowie to play the Warriors. There they played the most crushing game this season, really battering and bruis- ing the Warriors, but came out with a 15-14 loss. These Indian captains helped lead the team to a successful seventy-seventy -one season. ROBERT STINSON, BOBBY PIPPIN, MIKE MULLINS.
